Overview

Purpose of Position: Provides efficient, professional coordination of Laboratory information and specimen processing. Provides support to the technical staff.

Responsibilities
  • Must be courteous to patients, visitors, physicians, volunteers, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ensures the satisfaction of all users of the department's services, both internal and external. This includes developing monitoring programs and continually seeking ways to improve user (i.e. customer) satisfaction.
  • Performs data processing functions to include; non-patient admissions, order entry, cancellation, result entry and retrieval and log review.
  • Operates computer system in all assigned functions including maintenance, troubleshooting and implementation of backup systems.
  • Answers the phone, relays messages, provides prompt and accurate information to requesting parties concerning testing procedures and results.
  • Communicates all relevant information to technical staff regarding specimens including adequacy, test add-on and cancellations and test priority.
  • Delivers or mail reports and picks-up requisitions and specimens within the hospital.
  • Verifies incoming specimens with courier, checks specimens for acceptability and special handling needs and distributes to sections.
  • Prepares specimens for shipment to intra-system sites, reference labs and other institutions; compiles necessary support documentation, makes necessary arrangements for transportation.
  • Coordinates reporting and filing reference lab reports.
  • Checks inventory, orders stock-items and stores upon arrival.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information deemed confidential.
  • Maintains harmonious and cooperative relations with fellow employees, medical staff, patients and guests and serves effectively as part of the Laboratory team in performing professional service to patients.
  • Maintains workbenches, testing areas and other work areas in clean, sanitary and free of clutter condition for the safety of patients, guests and staff.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental and Hospital policies and procedures as they pertain to the job, including the fire and disaster plans.
  • Collects data for QA and other projects.
  • Responsible for pre-analytic specimen processing, i.e. aliquoting, labeling, numbering, operation centrifuge, creating work cards, prioritizing specimens.
  • Inoculates and processes culture specimens and prepares for transportation.
  • Obtains appropriate blood specimens from patients of all ages as assigned.
  • Performs glassware cleaning duties and general cleaning (not performed by Environmental Services) as assigned.
  • Performs other work related duties and activities as assigned or requested.
  • Must wear facility provided identification badge.

EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE
  • Ability to read, write, understand and follow written instruction;
  • Typing at least 30 wpm;
  • Completion of Medical Terminology I or successfully pass FH’s Medical Terminology test with a score of 80% or better and one year work experience as a Clinical Associate, Unit clerk, Diagnostic Tech, PST, FH Lab assistant, PSA, PCT, HUC, CNA, Medical secretary and other positions that require Lab test ordering or phlebotomy.
  • Data systems knowledge and demonstration of effective interpersonal communication skills.
Schedule Details

48PP (24 hrs. per week), Rot. Days/Eves, 11a-7p, may also cover 3p-11p, Rot. Weekends and Holidays
