Position: *Clinical Leader, Emergency Services (Per Diem)

Overview

Clinical Leader, Emergency Services (Per Diem) – Purpose of Position:
Responsible for planning, organizing and coordinating daily shift operations to ensure flow and quality patient care.

Responsibilities
  • Plans, organizes and manages nursing duties and provides leadership in complying with governmental, accreditation and other regulations/requirements and with hospital policies.
  • Meets all Professional Competency Standards of Emergency Nursing Practice.
  • Quality of Care – Evaluates the quality and effectiveness of emergency nursing practice in the department.
  • Performance Appraisal - Adheres to established standards of practice, including activities and behaviors that characterize professional status.
  • Collegiality - Engages in activities and behaviors that characterize a professional.
  • Ethics - Provides care based on philosophical and ethical concepts. These concepts include reverence for life; respect for the inherent dignity, worth, autonomy, and individuality of each human being; and acknowledgement of the diversity of all people.
  • Collaboration - Ensures open and timely communication with emergency patients, significant others and other health care providers through professional collaboration.
  • Resource Utilization - Collaborates with other health care providers to deliver patient-centered care in a manner consistent with safe, efficient and cost-effective resource utilization.
  • Facilitates the implementation of departmental policies/procedures, mission, goals.
  • May participate in recruitment activities and staff orientation training.
  • Participates in the nursing care related to assessment, promotion, maintenance and restoration of patients  health and wellness.
  • Teams with manager to instill support, and serves as a resource to staff on Process Improvement (PI) initiatives throughout the hospital.
  • Participates in audits and provides feedback to staff.
  • Responsible for monitoring patient flow and responding with the appropriate actions to expedite patients’ throughput.
  • Facilitates communication with staff regarding department activities, policy changes, etc.
  • Completes Daily Staffing Assignments for assigned shift.
  • Communicates with management to determine staffing needs.
  • Participates in hospital wide clinical leader networking sessions.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of current nursing practices and protocols.
  • Knowledge of clinic policies and procedures.
Skills
  • Skill in appropriate assessment, examination, treatment techniques.
  • Skill in dealing effectively with personnel development and issues.
  • Skill in QM, medication, infection control, safety and confidentiality policies by effectively role modeling appropriate behavior.
  • Skill in leadership and mentoring.
Abilities
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
  • Ability to react calmly and competently in emergency situations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in person, in writing, or by phone.

Qualifications
  • Graduation from an approved nursing education program. Preferred Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or related field or enrolled in an accredited program.
  • Current license to practice professional nursing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Current Basic Life Support Certification and Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification.
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention) within 4 months of new position and must renew bi-annually.
  • Current TNCC and ENPC certifications preferred.
  • Three to five years recent experience as a Charge Nurse or Preceptor.
  • Must demonstrate leadership abilities. Must possess good oral and written communication skills.
  • Three to five recent years of progressively responsible emergency center experience.
  • Where qualifications are relatively equal, seniority shall be the determining factor in filling the position.
