The IR Sedation Nurse is responsible for the assessment of patients including the development, evaluation, and modification of the plan of care for patients receiving moderate sedation for surgical procedures. The Registered Nurse is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility and accountability for the comfort and safety of patients for a designated time frame.
Responsibilities- Performs activities necessary for the preparation of the patient and the procedure room for radiology procedures in compliance with policies, procedures, and state and federal regulations.
- Conducts all necessary preparations for the patient procedure room.
- Stock the Nursing Cart for the day’s procedures with supplies to include EKG leads and oxygen.
- Print the daily schedule and pre-op call template.
- Perform narcotic count in the morning and manage narcotics during the day; document all used narcotics and return unused items to the lock box; perform end-of-day narcotic count.
- Check in the first patient of the day, explain procedures, answer questions, and address patient concerns.
- Administer medications pre-, intra-, and post-op.
- Monitor patient vitals intra-operatively (including BP, EKG rhythm, and oxygen saturation) and ensure there are no airway obstructions.
- Scan items used in the procedure room into the inventory management system.
- Administer sedation medications through IV access and transfer sedation from the procedure room to the holding area, monitor vitals, and sign off on the transfer document.
- Comply with HIPAA policies and standards regarding patient confidentiality.
- Oversee the crash cart; perform AED checks and maintain the expired medication log daily.
- Check inventory monthly and restock as needed.
- Train new Nurses and Medical Assistants as needed.
- Make postoperative calls to patients and document in the patient’s chart.
