Position Summary
The Primary Assistant Teacher supports the Lead Teacher in guiding children’s daily activities in alignment with Montessori philosophy and MSNV policies and procedures. This role plays an essential part in preparing, maintaining, and sustaining a nurturing classroom environment where children can develop independence, self‑reliance, and a love of learning.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe Assistant Teacher closely works with the Lead Teacher to implement lesson plans, manage the classroom environment, and support individual and small group learning. The Assistant Teacher brings creativity, positive guidance, and attentiveness to daily classroom routines. This helps ensure smooth transitions and minimizes interruptions while the Lead Teacher is teaching or observing.
This role also shares responsibility for student safety and well‑being, including supervising routines, drills, and classroom coverage as needed. The Assistant Teacher may provide short‑term coverage for the Lead Teacher, promptly report accidents or safety concerns, and helps maintain a calm, orderly learning environment.
In addition, the Assistant Teacher is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and well‑organized classroom and playground. Duties include caring for materials, furniture, supplies, and snacks; assisting with curriculum preparation, repairs, and inventory management; and ensuring both indoor and outdoor learning spaces remain hazard‑free.
Collaboration & CommunicationThe Assistant Teacher helps maintain accurate classroom records, communicates and cooperates with the Lead Teacher regarding classroom and program needs, and supports positive relationships with families by appropriately referring parent questions or concerns to the Lead Teacher.
Qualifications:- Prior experience working with children in a school or childcare setting.
- Montessori teaching credential a plus, but not required.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain required background checks.
- Must display independent judgment and strong organizational skills.
- Ability to handle confidential information as it relates to students and school.
- Ability to communicate with emergency personnel.
- Ability to maintain CPR/First Aid and Medical Administration certifications as needed.
- Communicate effectively both orally and written with parent volunteers, staff and others.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor related to abuse, neglect, or exploitation of children or adults.
- Ability to walk, stand, maintain balance, climb ladders, crouch, lift up to 50 lbs., bend, stoop, and reach above shoulder level.
- Ability to perform to help out on weekends and for school functions as needed.
- Communicate effectively and appropriately with the age group to which s/he is assigned.
- Physically assisting the children in the classroom and on the playground, which includes occasional lifting.
- Sit with children on the floor.
- Manage a group of children successfully and effectively.
