Highway Maintenance Worker 4

The Nevada Department of Transportation is recruiting to fill the Highway Maintenance Worker 4 position in Cold Springs Maintenance Yard 60 miles outside of Fallon, NV. This is a lead position and assumes the responsibilities of the supervisor in their absence. The worker assists the supervisor in planning and scheduling routine maintenance activities (fence repair, guardrail repair, asphalt patching and repair, concrete repair, etc.)

On‑site housing is available for selected applicants.

Responsibilities
  • Assist supervisor in planning and scheduling routine maintenance activities.
  • Operate and perform preventive maintenance and minor repair on a variety of highway maintenance equipment.
  • Act as designated certified operator for certification of Highway Maintenance Worker I’s and II’s; provide training and oversee equipment operation in accordance with safety policies.
  • Install permanent and temporary pavement markings, including long line, solid and skip lines, and gore lines.
  • Apply chip and flush seals to construction of maintenance overlays, and perform cold milling and inlays with hot asphalt.
  • Respond to customer service requests, prepare billable accident reports, and input information into the Maintenance Management System.
  • Establish traffic controls using accepted methods and maintain communication with base station, law enforcement, and the Incident Command System as required.
  • Operate loaders, trucks, and snow removal equipment to stockpile and apply salt, sand, anti‑icing chemicals; remove snow with dump trucks and pre‑wetting equipment; construct and maintain brine‑making facilities.
  • Install, repair, and replace roadway signs, signposts, and signal bulbs, fixtures, and sensors.
  • Monitor contract compliance, conduct quality control testing and materials inspections.
  • Maintain landscaped areas and right‑of‑way, including tree, flower, shrub, and ground cover maintenance.
  • Remove roadway and roadside debris, excess vegetation, dead animals, and biohazards.
  • Respond to accidents and fatalities, and complete required forms and documentation.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Graduated from high school or equivalent education.
  • One year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker III in Nevada State service, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certified to operate a variety of complex highway maintenance equipment.
  • Detailed knowledge of materials, methods and equipment commonly used in reconstructing, renovating or repairing highway roadbed, surface, shoulders, drainage facilities, and fixtures.
  • Pruning and watering techniques for landscaped areas.
  • Traffic paints and beads and retro‑reflectivity qualities of these materials.
  • Hazardous materials isolation zones as first responders to hazardous material spills.
  • Maintenance Management System Manual.
  • Dust control techniques.
  • Endangered species habitats, protection techniques and safe removal of non-native species.
  • Environmental regulations that impact the method of work at job sites.
  • Incident command system and operational controls during emergency operations.
