Position SummaryThe Child Support division of the Churchill County District Attorney's Office performs a vital function for our community by ensuring custodial parents receive the child support payments due from non-custodial parents. The work involves locating parents and securing payments and requires an analytical mind, strong research skills, professionalism, empathy for people in stressful situations, and proficiency with math and computer applications.
Bilingual Spanish‑English is a plus. Office support experience is required; legal or social service experience is helpful. The work can be stressful, but the rewarding results are significant.
A Child Support Caseworker handles a relatively heavy caseload and must effectively carry out multiple tasks amid frequent interruptions. Duties include gathering and researching information for establishing child support obligations, locating absent parents, collecting and disbursing payments, answering questions from entities about policies, and appearing in Court as a witness in child‑support matters.
Essential Functions- Demonstrate regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
- Interview complainants, defendants, witnesses and other interested parties to verify information and locate persons and assets.
- Discuss, negotiate and establish child‑support and arrears payments; negotiate settlements; prepare information for court appearances and assist civil attorneys as required.
- Explain family‑support laws and regulations to clients; assist clients in completing forms; initiate correspondence to public and private organizations and agencies to obtain documentary evidence.
- Conduct financial investigations to locate assets and determine defendant’s ability to pay.
- Order, prepare and process legal documents (summons, bonds, wage attachments, liens, judgments, complaints, motions, orders); serve legal process papers.
- Prepare trial materials, conferences, findings of fact and conclusions of law; confer with attorneys.
- Compose reports, correspondence and other written materials.
- Prepare and update case audits; ensure accurate balances are reflected and reported to agencies.
- Monitor, maintain and update case files; enforce compliance actions.
- Input and update cases in the computer system.
- File and scan documents, letters and related materials.
- Communicate in person, by telephone, or in writing with petitioners, respondents, out‑of‑state agencies, attorneys and local businesses.
- Develop and maintain contacts with other departments and agencies.
- Contribute to efficiency and effectiveness of the department’s service; provide suggestions as an active team member.
- May be required to testify in court.
- Handle difficult members of the public.
- Represent the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships.
Education And Experience
High School diploma/GED and two (2) years of office support experience; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Legal office terminology, processes, procedures and format for legal documents.
- Use of specified computer applications involving word processing, data entry and/or standard report generation.
- Business arithmetic.
- Business letter writing and standard typed‑material format.
- Laws, rules, regulations, procedures, documents and terminology related to child‑support activities.
- Principles, methods and techniques of effective interviewing, negotiating and case management.
- Methods, techniques and resources for locating persons and investigative research.
- Record keeping principles and practices.
- Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Techniques for dealing with the public in person and over the telephone in confrontational or strained relations.
