Overview

Summary: The Manager of Epidemiology and Infection Prevention reports to the Health Director, Epidemiology and Infection Control. Under general supervision, manages the systemwide program to identify, reduce and prevent healthcare-associated infections, with oversight aligned to Brown University Health’s leadership structure. Responsible for the systematic collection and analysis of infection data, designing and evaluating prevention strategies, education for Infection Preventionists, and coordinating operational processes.

Monitors quality assessment/performance improvement (QAPI) in ambulatory and outpatient infection control and ensures relevant regulatory requirements are met.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Medical Director and Director of Epidemiology and Infection Control to develop and evaluate Brown University Health’s infection prevention and control program across all care settings.
  • Provide direct supervision for Infection Preventionists in inpatient or outpatient settings and help develop, implement and evaluate a comprehensive Infection Prevention and Control Plan for assigned affiliates, ensuring regulatory/ accreditation expectations are met.
  • Ensure infection preventionists’ competency evaluation against professional standards (e.g., APIC domains).
  • Assist in assigning staff to monitor surveillance, submit infection information to NHSN/CMS and RIDOH as needed, and perform additional infection control activities.
  • Provide project management, data gathering/analysis, and decision support for infection prevention initiatives focusing on safety, reporting, and improvement.
  • Identify issues through failure analysis; lead or support improvement teams and track performance improvement plans with objective data to evaluate outcomes.
  • Notify the Director of issues and facilitate corrective actions; lead improvement initiatives for inpatient infection control using established processes and tools.
  • Develop action plans in response to infection/exposure trends, monitor execution, and address root causes; collaborate with staff and physicians to achieve outcomes from root cause analysis.
  • Address gaps in clinical practice related to infection prevention; promote antibiotic stewardship and appropriate diagnostic testing.
  • Plan dissemination of information for hospital-wide infection prevention improvements; collaborate with Risk Management, Nursing, Pharmacy and other departments to ensure optimal workflow and accurate data reporting/sharing.
  • Review literature to maintain knowledge of regulatory standards (federal, state, voluntary) related to infection prevention and Joint Commission accreditation.
  • Prepare or assist in patient safety reports for various governance and medical staff committees; identify best practices and educate frontline staff and stakeholders.
  • Support infection prevention techniques through ongoing staff/provider training; eliminate and mitigate infection sources and environmental concerns; conduct infection control risk analyses as needed for facilities projects.
  • Recruit and supervise infection prevention staff; assign work, evaluate performance, ensure policy compliance, and provide guidance; act as a resource and trainer.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing, Public Health, or a clinical area with strong knowledge of infection prevention and control;
    Master’s or advanced degree preferred.
  • Certification in Infection Control required (condition of continued employment).
  • Strong verbal/written/presentation skills.
  • Six Sigma/Lean Green Belt or Black Belt certification and TapRooT (RCA) desired or to be completed within 24 months of hire.
  • Five years of relevant experience in infection prevention and control in health care, with experience in facilitation, performance improvement methods, and project management; knowledge of TJC and state infection control standards required.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises up to 10 FTEs.
