Overview
The Nursing Assistant is responsible for providing direct patient care under the direction of an RN/Clinical Leader. Duties include but are not limited to vital signs, transferring patients, making occupied and unoccupied beds, measuring intake and output, and other related duties as assigned. The role functions in a complementary or assistive capacity to a qualified licensed nurse and supports activities to meet basic human needs including nutrition, hydration, mobility, comfort, elimination, socialization, rest, and hygiene.
The position involves collecting, reporting, and documenting simple data. - Assist patients in getting in and out of chairs, beds, wheelchairs, stretchers, etc.
- Make beds (occupied and unoccupied) and change linen as necessary.
- Assist with treatments within the scope of responsibility.
- Assist with meals and nourishment, including water and fluids; feed patients as necessary.
- Initiate or perform CPR in an emergency situation.
- Perform indwelling catheter care and apply Texas catheters.
- Observe, report, measure, and record urinary output, feces, and emesis.
- Apply ice bags and collars, and warm or cold non-sterile compresses.
- Take and record weights, temperatures, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure.
- Provide enemas as appropriate.
- Collect specimens and record information.
- Assist with admission, discharge, and transfer of patients.
- Perform skin care including incontinence and decubitus care after assessment and as directed by RN.
- Observe patients on 1:1 or close observation status.
- Apply protective and therapeutic devices and assist with placement of Blanketrol.
- Assist with post-mortem care as directed.
- Report any untoward or unusual occurrences to the nurse; report faulty equipment and unsafe conditions as they occur.
- Maintain patients rooms in a neat and orderly manner with a clear walk-in area.
- Safely transport patients via wheelchair or stretcher.
- Attach patients to cardiac monitors in Tele, ICU or ED as applicable.
- Carry out Body Substance Isolation in all patient care to protect self and others.
- Give complete baths or partial bed baths, assist with baths or showers, provide tepid sponge baths, and assist with Sitz baths when needed.
- Care for patients teeth, dentures, nails, feet, and shave patients as directed.
- Store hearing aids, dentures, eyeglasses, and other valuables safely in accordance with hospital policy.
- 6 months of experience in a hospital, long-term care, or rehabilitation setting preferred.
- Education:
High school diploma or GED. - Current MA CNA certification and BLS required.
