Schedule: Full-Time (30–40 hours/week), Exempt
Reports To: Chief Financial Officer
Position OverviewA mission-driven nonprofit organization is seeking an Accounting Manager to support and oversee core accounting operations while partnering closely with the CFO. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate financial records, strong internal controls, and timely reporting across multiple programs and funding sources.
The Accounting Manager will play a hands-on role in the monthly close, audit coordination, and day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll-related accounting. The ideal candidate brings nonprofit accounting experience, strong Excel skills, and familiarity with fund accounting systems such as MIP (or similar).
Key Responsibilities Accounting Operations & Close- Manage the monthly close process, including journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, and variance analysis
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure accuracy across A/P, A/R, and payroll-related entries
- Reconcile bank accounts and investigate outstanding or unusual items
- Prepare financial statements and supporting schedules for internal leadership and Board review
- Provide financial analysis, reporting, and insights to support decision-making
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and ad hoc financial projects as needed
- Serve as a primary accounting contact for external auditors and regulatory reviewers
- Support annual audits and required nonprofit filings, including Form 990, UFRs, 1099s, and MA Form PC
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and internal policies
- Monitor cash balances and support banking and treasury activities
- Maintain payroll-related accounting processes, including ADP general ledger mapping and reconciliations
- Oversee petty cash activity and conduct periodic reviews of program funds
- Evaluate accounting workflows and recommend improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy
- Support the CFO in strengthening internal controls and documentation
- Contribute to system improvements and reporting enhancements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- 3+ years of accounting experience within a nonprofit or fund-accounting environment
- Experience working with MIP Fund Accounting (formerly Sage/Abila MIP) or comparable fund accounting software
- Familiarity with ADP payroll reporting and general ledger integration
- Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, and financial analysis
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
- Detail-oriented, proactive, and comfortable working in a collaborative nonprofit setting
- Alignment with the mission and values of a human services organization
