Commissioning and Substation Services Engineer

About The Opportunity

This is an open position with First Energy Service Co., a subsidiary of First Energy Corp. The role may be positioned at a level below the posting, determined by interview outcomes.

The position may be located in Williamsport, MD or Fairmont, WV. It involves field engineering services and technical support for maintenance, construction, testing, and commissioning of substation equipment up to 500 kV, including transformers, breakers, CBs, CCVTs, capacitance banks, SVCs, protection, control equipment, and SCADA systems. Applicants will spend ≥90 % of the time on the field.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain a safe workplace by identifying hazards and applying industry regulations.
  • Commission new substation equipment before release to transmission operations.
  • Develop check‑out guides, approve test results and isolation plans, and create energization plans to minimize risk.
  • Provide limited field design services to resolve minor design problems during capital projects.
  • Offer onsite technical support to regional substation services employees during preventive and corrective maintenance.
  • Use engineering skills to identify and resolve technical problems in the field during installation, testing, and operation.
  • Assist in developing or modifying maintenance practices in response to technology changes.
  • Audit preventive and corrective maintenance paperwork to verify technical adequacy and regulatory completeness.
  • Provide emergency technical support following equipment failures to support customer restoration and system reinforcement.
  • Participate in storm duties, including hazard response.
  • Work effectively independently or collaboratively with regional and plant personnel, vendors, and cross‑disciplinary teams.
  • Communicate with contractors, customers, interchange staff, and various internal departments to ensure timely project completion.
  • Perform apparent cause and root cause analyses, documenting findings in technical reports and presentations.
  • Educate others on technical subjects and improve technical programs and process effectiveness.
  • Support corporate programs and policies, assisting organizational change.
  • Assist senior technical staff in developing solutions to complex assignments.
  • Support FE Utilities Operations and Maintenance staff in meeting goals and deadlines.
  • Produce results that directly benefit the company.
  • Anticipate customer needs and deliver high‑quality results.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the First Energy system and stay overnight when necessary.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution is required; alternatives include a Professional Engineer license or a non‑ABET bachelor’s plus an advanced ABET‑accredited engineering degree.
  • FE license is preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of engineering experience.
  • Working knowledge of electrical engineering, substation equipment, protection, and operations.
  • Experience in the design, maintenance or testing of substation equipment is highly regarded.
  • Familiarity with microprocessor‑based protection and control equipment.
  • Experience with SEL products, Enoserve RTS, and Doble testing.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to First Energy’s Safety Policies and Accident Prevention Handbook.
  • Understanding of First Energy’s Manual of Operations.
  • Availability for after‑hours callouts to provide on‑site guidance.
  • Ability to lead by example.
  • Strong project management and prioritization skills under pressure.
  • Continuous learning attitude.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
