About Us

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community.

Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Description of Work

The Division of Community Supervision (DCS) offers a year-round internship program for qualified students seeking to gain practical, hands‑on experience in adult corrections. We are now accepting applications for Summer and Fall
semesters – apply anytime throughout the year!

Internship Details:

Schedule
: 10-week program (minimum of 16 hours/week; at least 2 days/week)


Start Dates
:
Flexible start dates available for all semesters


Compensation
:
May be paid or unpaid, depending on schools, placement, eligibility, and program funding. If funds are available, Undergraduate student pay rate is $18.00/hour;
Graduate student pay rate is $22.00/hour. Candidates will be notified at the time of final offer if the internship will be paid or unpaid.

  • Currently enrolled junior or senior level standing at an accredited college/university with a major in an accredited four‑year degree in Criminal Justice, Correctional Services, Psychology, Social Work or other Human Services majors
  • Applicant must carry a 2.5 GPA. Official or Unofficial Transcript must be attached to application
  • Currently enrolled graduate level standing at an accredited college/university with a major in Criminal Justice, Correctional Services, Psychology, Social Work or other Human Services majors
  • Letter of recommendation from current college advisor. This letter should confirm the applicant’s current GPA, verify that they are enrolled and in good academic standing, and indicate that they will be a junior, senior, or graduate student during the semester for which they are applying. The letter must also state that the applicant is eligible or will be eligible to participate in an internship through their academic program (must be attached to application)
  • Character reference letter from a supervisor, professor, or other person with whom the applicant has a professional relationship with (must be attached to application)
