Job Summary

City of Delray Beach is hiring a Planner in Training (Part‑time). The position requires recent graduates from a Planning program or related field and includes developing knowledge of the City’s Land Development Regulations (LDR’s), providing technical assistance, and supporting planning staff in various review processes. The role is a 29‑hour, 18‑month part‑time position with no benefits.

Job Duties
  • Assist with processing land development applications including data input and file creation.
  • Review land development applications and plans pursuant to the City’s Land Development Regulations; present completed applications and plans to staff for acceptance and review.
  • Perform data research for development proposals and special projects.
  • Respond to zoning inquiries, including written, phone, email, and hand‑to‑hand inquiries.
  • Provide technical support for other department projects.
  • Perform planning site inspections.
  • Perform data input and basic analysis for the department database.
  • Attend advisory board meetings as assigned.
  • Assist the department in file and data management.
  • Interact with and provide technical assistance to customers regarding the status of applications.
  • Perform all functions and responsibilities according to the Palm Beach County Code of Ethics and Florida State Statutes 112.313.
  • Foster positive employee relations and morale on a city‑wide basis and perform all responsibilities with strict compliance to the City’s code of ethics.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Arts or Science in Planning, Community Development, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Knowledge of the City’s LDR’s.
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures for plan review and approval is a plus but can be learned on the job.

  • Ability to read and interpret site and grading plans, plats, and surveys.
  • Diplomatic interaction with the public and coworkers.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with the development community.
  • Proficiency in accessing and retrieving information from the City’s automated systems.
  • Ability to handle multiple work assignments concurrently and adapt in an evolving environment.
  • Proficiency with personal computer and office software such as MS Word, MS Excel, GIS, Sketch Up, PowerPoint, and email.

  • Operate and care for equipment to manufacturer’s specifications and within specified parameters.
