Job Summary:
This position will work in the Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO) Program (PI, Bruce Menge). PISCO is a long‑term monitoring and research program designed to understand the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem. The role assists professors, technicians, post‑doctoral fellows, and graduate students in research on ecosystem dynamics of rocky intertidal communities along the US West Coast. Responsibilities include laboratory and intertidal field work such as sample processing, data entry, making sample devices, maintaining field equipment, assisting with instrument calibrations, monitoring field experiments, and surveys of intertidal communities, biodiversity and abundance.
The position requires early morning and weekend work, multiple overnight trips, technical hiking with a heavy load up to 50 lbs, and other field work demands.
- 70% Field Work
- Laboratory and intertidal field work including sample processing, data entry, device fabrication, equipment maintenance, instrument calibration assistance, field experiment monitoring, and intertidal community surveys.
- Early morning and weekend work, multiple overnight trips, technical hiking with heavy load up to 50 lbs.
- Two years of college‑level courses in Marine Biology or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Ability to be self‑motivated and work both independently and in team settings.
- Driving a university vehicle or personal vehicle on behalf of the university – must have a valid driver’s license, pass motor vehicle history check.
- Self‑directed task accomplishment.
- Experience with Microsoft Office suite.
- Experience with data entry and quality control.
- Ability to embrace diversity and foster an inclusive research environment.
- Primary work in lab space at OSU, Department of Integrative Biology, Corvallis, OR and various sites along Oregon and Northern California coasts.
- Periodic overnight stays at coast housing or camping during intensive sampling periods, weekend work, and early morning hours.
- Heavy lifting up to 50 lbs and strenuous fieldwork on rocky shores.
- Driving to and from coastal sites each day, typical driving times 1.5 – 4 hours per day, often in darkness.
