Description

The Waterfront Director leads Camp Pepin’s Lake Pepin waterfront – setting the standard for safety, staff readiness, and high‑quality instruction
. This is one of camp’s most defining and highest‑risk areas, and safety is paramount. You’ll train lifeguards and staff, run emergency drills, and make critical decisions related to weather, water quality, and safety protocols with the Camp Director.

In addition, the Waterfront Director is a primary instructor for waterfront activities – including kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, sailing, and swimming – while also evaluating counselors’ teaching proficiency and ensuring equipment is inspected and ready. Alongside your waterfront leadership, you contribute as a camp‑wide leader by collaborating with other staff and supporting the overall camp experience as needed.

Essential Functions

Ensure Safety
Implement and enforce all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Emergency Procedures for waterfront activities; make critical decisions on weather, water quality, and lifeguard coverage in collaboration with the Camp Director.

Lead Staff Training and Drills
Conduct in‑service sessions, safety trainings, and emergency drills for lifeguards and staff, ensuring proficiency in procedures and emergency responses.

Oversee Waterfront Instruction
Serve as the primary instructor for kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, sailing, and swimming; develop and adapt curriculum to meet camper needs.

Maintain Equipment
Conduct daily safety checks and regular maintenance of all waterfront equipment to ensure it is safe, functional, and ready for use.

Support Staff Development
Mentor and support counselors throughout the summer; provide ongoing feedback and contribute to their professional growth.

Foster Camper Development and Supervision
Apply youth development principles; ensure campers are safely supervised while engaging in meaningful and inclusive waterfront activities.

Contribute to Camp Pepin’s Legacy
Embody YMCA/Camp Pepin mission and values; uphold high standards of service and commitment to foster a positive camp environment.

Expected Hours of Work

Program Staff hours are generally midmorning Sundays through Friday evenings
. Program Staff are expected to be onsite 24 hours/day while camp is in operation.
