About the Department

The Political Science Department is housed in the Social & Behavioral Sciences Division. We offer an Associate’s Degree for Transfer (AA-T) in Political Science and courses in various fields, including a Pathway in Constitutional Law, Civil Rights, Contract and Criminal Law, and a Pathway in International Relations, Comparative Politics, and World Politics/Foreign Policy. Courses are offered in multiple modalities and locations.

Responsibilities
  • Teach survey courses in Political Science, including Introduction to American Government and Politics and Introduction to Political Science.
  • Teach in both Pathways described above; provide instruction in accordance with established course outlines of record; inform/advise students about program requirements; evaluate and provide timely verbal and written assessments of student performance; prepare and grade assignments and examinations; meet administrative timelines and submit required documents.
  • Maintain regular office hours in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Develop, review, and maintain currency of curriculum in collaboration with other faculty and articulation officer.
  • Participate in the development, assessment, and evaluation of student learning outcomes (SLO) and Program Learning Outcomes (PLO).
  • Participate in department/school meetings and college/department governance; collaborate with faculty, staff, administration, and students to close equity gaps.
  • Assist in developing and teaching courses at Vacaville and Vallejo campuses, in the Rising Scholar’s program, and online; maintain currency in the field; collaborate on hiring and mentoring adjunct faculty.
  • Engage in professional development and outreach, and participate in shared governance and college activities; maintain effective communication with peers, staff, students, and administrators.
  • Teaching assignments may include evening/weekend hours and off-campus instruction; participate in student outreach and recruitment as part of division and college services.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A commitment to encouraging learning and supporting students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Master’s Degree in Political Science, Government, or International Relations OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the above AND a Master’s Degree in Economics, Public Administration, Social Science, Sociology, Ethnic Studies, J.D. or L.L.B., OR the equivalent.
  • If qualifications are not met exactly, an equivalency review may be requested with supporting documents. Equivalency requires general education for the degree and major coursework from an accredited institution.

Work Environment

The position may involve working in small or larger offices, extended computer use, and intermittent interruptions in both in-person and online settings. Frequent use of online meetings technology, email, and other communication tools is required. Candidates should be able to write and read printed materials and work with computer screens, appliances, and other office equipment.
