Overview

Inova Fair Oaks Hospital is seeking an experienced nursing leader to manage our inpatient women’s, children’s services, as well as nursing operations. The Senior Director, Nursing Services is responsible for the development, coordination and evaluation of clinical nursing programs, education and research related activities for designated clinical divisions/departments. This role oversees the implementation of system-wide initiatives related to nursing and model of care with emphasis on continuity of care, the nurse-patient-family relationship/experience, and the development of accountability systems.

The position works collaboratively with other disciplines to ensure programs are well planned and services are integrated to support a patient-centered, outcome-driven approach to care. It also involves management of human, fiscal and material resources within the division. The Senior Director may act on behalf of the Chief Nursing Executive in her/his absence and may work with physician leaders, CMO and service line administrators on program development and departmental initiatives.

Participates with senior management in policy development and program planning.

Responsibilities
  • Oversees assigned department or functional area to ensure it is performing effectively, including developing and implementing business strategies to achieve organizational goals, ensuring legal compliance, communicating with stakeholders, managing employment decisions and contributions of staff, and managing departmental budget and fiscal performance.
  • Serves as primary resource in developing systems that promote continuity of care and accountability for practice. Seeks opportunities to advance nursing practice and professional development.
  • Collaborates with vice presidents and administrators to identify non-clinical supports for safe, effective patient and family care; ensures clinicians have necessary resources. Assesses environmental needs, including equipment and supplies, and ensures availability and accessibility of such resources.
  • Works with administrative and clinical colleagues on business plans, clinical programs and services. Accountable for nursing programs within the division(s). Supports and carries out department objectives and mission. Implements standards of care and provides direction in developing policies for Inpatient Services/Nursing. Partners with Risk Management and Legal to identify risks, investigate incidents, take corrective action and evaluate effectiveness. Leads programmatic approaches to care programs and outcomes management focusing on clinical outcomes, patient access and throughput, functional outcomes, patient satisfaction, employee engagement, physician satisfaction and financial outcomes.
  • Maintains awareness of current laws governing nursing practice in Virginia and ensures compliance; participates in regulatory reviews as required.
  • Prepares and recommends a divisional budget based on goals and data, implements approved budget, monitors variances, and develops a master staffing plan for the division. Approves unit-based plans developed by Patient Care Directors/Nurse Managers.
  • Recruits, hires and trains staff according to Inova Health System policies and procedures. Identifies educational and training needs and develops an educational plan to meet them.
Minimum Requirements
  • Certification:
    Certified by a nationally recognized organization such as ANCC, AONE or ACHE; must hold at least one nationally recognized certification.
  • Licensure:
    Licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Registered Nurse.
  • Experience:

    4 years of progressive nursing Director/Management experience.
  • Education:

    Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
Preferred Requirements
  • Demonstrated responsibility for nursing operations supporting a minimum of 200+ FTEs and/or multi-unit clinical divisions, with direct accountability for staffing, quality, and outcomes.
  • Leadership experience in a women’s and children’s services clinical setting.
