The Shift Supervisor plays a critical leadership role in ensuring smooth operations and a safe, supportive environment at a large Fairfax County emergency shelter for families with minor children. The shelter consists of 85 units and approximately 344 beds. This position oversees a team of Residential Coordinators, providing direct supervision and support to staff on shift while ensuring consistency in client service delivery, crisis response, and shelter operations.
The Shift Supervisor is the primary point of contact for operational decision-making during assigned shifts and ensures compliance with all Shelter House policies and standards.
- Provide direct oversight, guidance, and support to Residential Coordinators during assigned shifts
- Serve as the on-site leader for shift operations, supporting crisis intervention and decision-making as needed
- Ensure Residential Coordinators are completing responsibilities in alignment with agency policies and procedures
- Conduct and document shift handoffs, ensuring clear communication and consistency between shifts. Write and send out End of Shift report(s)
- Support staff development through ongoing feedback, training reinforcement, and modeling Shelter House core values
- Monitor and maintain the safe and secure operation of the shelter, including performing walkthroughs of the building and surrounding grounds
- Respond to emergencies and incidents, ensuring appropriate documentation and escalation
- Ensure proper execution of emergency protocols, including building evacuations and health emergencies
- Review and ensure accuracy of daily shift logs and incident reports
- Support the Residential Coordinators in addressing client needs and upholding a trauma-informed, respectful environment
- Collaborate with case management and other program staff to ensure alignment with client service plans
- Ensure basic needs (toiletries, linens, supplies, etc.) are appropriately distributed and available
- Oversee intake and assessment processes, including One-Night-Only placements when necessary
- Address elevated client concerns or conflicts, using de-escalation and mediation skills as needed
- Ensure documentation and logs are maintained according to agency standards and best practices
- Oversee room turnovers, clean and prepare client rooms for move in
- Oversee unit inspections and facility cleanliness; assign and verify Residential Coordinator follow-through
- Coordinate and monitor donation intake and volunteer support during the shift
- Ensure supplies, donations, and inventory are organized, tracked, and replenished as needed
- Utilize technology (Google Suite, Microsoft Office) for communication, documentation, and reporting
- Participate in staff meetings, supervision, and training as required
- Serve as essential personnel; must report to work during emergencies, inclement weather, or other unusual circumstances
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support program operations and client care
- Assist with on-call coverage if applicable
