Overview

The Division of Child Support Enforcement (DCSE) manages nearly 246,000 cases to ensure child support payments of $598 million per year reach families across the Commonwealth.

Day‑to‑Day

Duties
  • Prepare, create, proofread, and finalize legal documents from various sources, including notes, rough drafts, dictation, and previously prepared documents.
  • Assist Assistant Attorney Generals in preparing for court cases and responding to legal questions and correspondence while ensuring confidentiality.
  • Provide professional, friendly service to customers and build strong working relationships.
  • Maintain attorneys' complex court schedules and calendars.
  • Deliver daily administrative support: answering calls, directing messages, handling written and verbal correspondence, faxing, filing, photocopying, preparing travel vouchers, collecting and distributing mail.
  • Participate in work groups, assist with process improvement, and serve as a trainer and mentor to other legal staff.
  • Travel to and from courts as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Legal terminology, court procedures, and legal drafting.
  • Administrative support functions.
  • Experience reviewing, drafting, preparing, proofreading, and editing legal documents for attorney review.
  • Prepared and processed required documents with minimal errors and met specified deadlines.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Answered and responded properly to phone calls, text messages, and emails from internal and external employees and customers.
  • Implemented or used a calendaring and tickle system.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe.
  • Knowledge of Uniform System Citation.
  • Worked with automated systems and databases.
  • Provided training, guidance, or mentoring to others.
  • Organized and prioritized work with attention to detail and deadline management.
  • Worked independently and as part of a team.
  • Communicated clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Exercised sound judgment and maintained complete discretion with confidential matters.
  • Professional, helpful demeanor in handling incoming communication with judges, attorneys, DCSE, and the public.
  • Experience providing training or mentoring to other staff.
Additional Considerations
  • Experience with DCSE policies and case processing procedures.
  • Familiarity with DCSE case management system and document viewer.
  • Experience reading, comprehending, and determining the difference in legal referrals, legal questions, and agency policy.
  • Certificate in Paralegal Studies, Legal Assistant, major coursework in Legal Studies, or considerable training providing legal support.
