The purpose of Auxiliary and Business Services (ABS) is to improve the quality of campus life for students, faculty, staff, and the community. Auxiliary and Business Services supports the University’s overall strategic plan by providing quality goods, innovative services, and strategic business partnerships that improve value, increase student success, and enhance the University’s financial condition.
About the PositionThe primary purpose of the Access Control and IT Technician is to provide maintenance to the University’s CCTV equipment and access control hardware to ensure the proper operation of all systems. Responsibilities include maintenance of network connectivity, software settings for all connected hardware, and documentation of work completed and inventory used.
Responsibilities- Repair and install access control, alarm, and CCTV systems.
- Provide and coordinate repairs and maintenance of technical equipment.
- Troubleshoot and provide end‑user technical support for access control, alarm, and CCTV systems.
- Install university card access, alarm, and CCTV systems, including running, pulling, terminating, and splicing cable, mounting system control panels and related components.
- Train peers and colleagues as directed by supervisor.
- Serve as commissioning agent for large contract installs and provide oversight for contractors.
- Ensure continuity and accuracy of contracted access control installs; maintain appropriate records and details of work done and time spent in the appropriate work order system.
- Handle customer service issues and manage requests and inquiries for technical services, maintaining accuracy and security.
- Conduct work in accordance with established GMU Access Control standards and policies, focusing on accuracy, customer service, and security.
- Plan, schedule, assign, and prioritize projects and assignments.
- Communicate status of assignments to appropriate personnel.
- Instruct staff in work procedures.
- Evaluate products and services and recommend technology solutions.
- Coordinate acquisition and integration of software programs and technical equipment.
- Maintain working relationship with University IT personnel.
- Provide end‑user technical support to troubleshoot and rectify issues when requested.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience with network connectivity issues and/or installation and repair of alarm, card access, or CCTV systems.
- Knowledge of access control systems and software.
- Effective customer service skills with independent judgement and decision making.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to concisely report solutions and demonstrate tact and diplomacy.
- Ability to learn complex software systems.
- Ability to diagnose network connectivity issues.
- Ability to work effectively within the department and with external colleagues.
- Attention to detail and high degree of accuracy.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- RS2, Exacq, and Assa Abloy installer certification or ability to obtain such certifications.
- Experience working in higher education.
