Position: Director of Nursing (Correctional Health Nurse IV)

$10,000 Sign-on Bonus

This position is a key leadership position in the Sheriff's Office's Medical Branch. The Director of Nursing manages 24/7 nursing operations at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, requiring expertise in acute, behavioral and public health nursing. Responsibilities
  • Coordinate nursing activities to ensure compliance with medical orders, agency policies, and procedures.
  • Participate in planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing services.
  • Interpret and teach accrediting agency standards to staff.
  • Directly manage assignment of caseloads, review reports, evaluate performance, train, supervise and counsel nursing personnel, and recommend disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Establish and approve work schedules that provide adequate coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Assess training, orientation needs and recommend workforce development opportunities.
  • Collaborate with medical services leadership to investigate inmate complaints and grievances and respond appropriately.
  • Serve as resource nurse for health‑care team supervisors and ensure completion of operational goals.
  • Act as Quality Assurance Nurse (QAN), implementing continuous quality improvement measures, evaluating service effectiveness, and developing measurement tools.
  • Update policies and procedures with the Correctional Health Services Administrator and coordinate staff implementation.
  • Prepare documentation to meet standards set by the Virginia Board of Corrections, Virginia Board of Health Professionals, American Correctional Association and National Commission on Correctional Health Care.
  • Participate in preparing the Section's budget request for additional equipment and/or staff.
  • Ensure medical records are properly maintained, confidential, and compliant with regulations.
  • Consult inmates' families and attorneys regarding health care delivery and services available.
  • Review performance evaluations, establish action plans, and identify training opportunities for subordinates.
  • Serve as resource nurse for Correctional Health Nurse III shift supervisor positions.
  • Make final decisions on health care issues at the section level, deferring to higher authorities when required.
  • Review and revise contract specifications and vendor contracts for health care services.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from a college or university accredited by the National League for Nursing with a bachelor's degree in nursing.
  • Five years of post‑licensure nursing experience, including at least one year of supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in an Emergency Room (ER) or an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
  • Background in correctional health.
  • NCCHC or other correctional accreditation experience.
Certificates and Licenses Required
  • Current license or multistate licensure privilege to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (Required).
  • CCHP‑RN Certification required within 12 months.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required within 12 months.

Special Requirements

The appointee will be required to complete a criminal background check, credit check, driving record check, pre‑employment medical evaluation, polygraph exam, psychological exam and tuberculosis test to the satisfaction of the employer.

Physical Requirements

Ability to effectively supervise the work of subordinate health‑care professionals and to quickly assess an emergency and respond appropriately. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
