Specialist III – Finance Team

The Finance team is seeking a Financial Specialist III to join a growing team of specialists. With limited direction from the Financial Specialist IV, this is an advanced financial professional responsible for the execution, coordination, and comprehensive analysis of the department's fiscal operations. This position guides departmental staff on procurement rules and processes, indirectly oversees accounts payable and general accounting activities, and complex reporting.

Directly supervises the Financial Specialist II and ensures procurement and other finance activities are compliant, efficient, and accurately reported to senior management. This role serves as a key fiscal liaison, coordinating across department units and with external county and state financial offices.

Note

Salary offer for the position will be in the minimum to midpoint range ($79,192.88 to $) and will NOT exceed the midpoint rate of the advertised compensation range. Promotional rules apply for current Fairfax County Government and Fairfax County Public Schools employees.

Required Qualifications
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices of governmental budgeting and fiscal management and the ability to apply them to complex governmental systems;
  • Considerable knowledge of federal, state and county policies, procedures, regulations and legislation impacting the maintenance of financial records;
  • Ability to effectively supervise and coordinate the activities of staff;
  • Ability to develop and implement fiscal policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with either a bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, public administration, public policy or related field; plus, three years of professional-level experience in finance, business administration, budgeting, or contract management; a master's degree in a related field or CPA may substitute for 1 year of experience.

Certificates and Licenses Required
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification (Required within 60 days of appointment).
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification (Required within 60 days of appointment).

Special Requirements

Appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, Child Protective Services Registry check, and credit check to the satisfaction of the employer. This position is emergency/essential services personnel. (Required to report for duty during inclement weather and/or other emergencies.)

Physical Requirements

Job is generally sedentary in nature and requires walking, standing, sitting (for long periods of time), kneeling, reaching, bending, and climbing stairs; may be required to lift or carry up to 25 lbs. as required for the position. Uses hands to grasp, handle, or feel. Visual acuity is required to read data from paper and on a computer monitor or other electronic device;

ability to operate keyboard driven equipment and computer and use of touchscreen. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing. Generally, works in an office environment and may occasionally be required to perform job duties outside of the typical office setting. Ability to drive a motor vehicle. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
