Zing Recruiting, in partnership with a leading public agency in Fairfax, VA, is seeking a Mechanical Engineer (Engineer IV) to join their team. This long‑term contract role offers stability, competitive pay, and the opportunity to manage impactful public facility projects.

Provides senior level leadership and is responsible for the overall development and management of large‑scale and/or multiple complex capital and non‑capital projects for and in occupied spaces or development and management of cross‑functional capital renewal projects that require working with all department and/or county levels and groups specific to the project design and implementation to address specific business needs. Works under the guidance and general direction of the project coordinator (principal engineer) and/or division director of design, engineering and construction.
Key Responsibilities- Responsible for and authorized to lead design projects and resolve construction issues as primary representative.
- Establishes project objectives and performance standards; performs difficult professional engineering work in managing and participating in the design, installation, operation and maintenance of HVAC, building automation systems (BAS), and plumbing equipment and systems (new, renovation and renewal).
- Performs review and analysis of plans and specifications for HVAC and plumbing features and compliance with code requirements.
- Serve as department subject matter expert and subject matter expert to multiple other county departments and agencies.
- As a registered professional engineer, leverages a strong technical background, excellence in design, attention to detail and quality control to perform and review mechanical engineering calculations, reports, construction drawings, specifications, schedules and budgets for commercial building mechanical, plumbing systems, and building automation systems.
- As licensed professional mechanical engineer signs and seals own work product.
- Ensures the timely completion of projects assigned consistent with quality standards of the Facilities Management Department (FMD) and industry standards, as well as ensuring projects are financially and operationally viable and completed in a cost‑efficient manner.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program.
- Minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible experience in electrical engineering.
- Valid Driver’s License
- Professional Engineer (PE) License
- Valid professional mechanical engineer license in the state of Virginia.
- Experience as the lead mechanical P.E. directly responsible and accountable for the design and sealing of commercial building mechanical and plumbing systems projects.
- 5 plus years’ experience as a lead mechanical P.E. directly responsible and accountable for the design of commercial building HVAC, building automation, and plumbing design, construction and energy management.
- 3 years’ experience as the lead mechanical P.E., in authoring and producing design and specification of HVAC, building automation system, and plumbing systems for commercial mission critical buildings.
- Experience as a lead mechanical P.E. responsible for the designing and construction of life cycle mechanical systems and component replacement in occupied mission critical commercial buildings.
- Strong background in energy management informing, validating and optimizing commercial building mechanical, automation and plumbing systems design and operation.
- Experience managing projects valued of at least $500,000.
- Strong contract management skills.
