The George Mason University School of Integrative Studies (SIS) is committed to integrating interdisciplinary knowledge with lifelong learning by offering experiential, hands‑on learning that connects the classroom to the world. Our academic advisors engage students in understanding and applying university and school programs and services, requirements, policies and procedures. They evaluate students' academic progress, provide guidance in determining students' academic interests and objectives, and aid them to develop long‑range academic and career plans.

About the Position

The primary purpose of this position is to provide comprehensive academic advising to SIS students. The academic advisor supports student success by guiding course selection, degree planning, and university policies, while fostering engagement and retention. This role also involves collaborating with faculty, staff, and university offices to ensure a high‑quality advising experience aligned with the school’s academic goals and student support mission.

Some evening hours will be required for certain recruitment events.

Please note, this is not a 100% remote/virtual position, however it is telework friendly.

Responsibilities Student Interaction
  • Provides in‑person and virtual academic advising in individual appointments, group events or presentations, and tabling, for current and aspiring SIS students on such topics as major or minor choice, curriculum selection, and other academic‑related areas; and
  • Understands and implements proper use of rules and procedures concerning confidentiality.
Database Management
  • Inputs individual student contact information into Patriot Connect (Salesforce) database to provide immediate access for other advisors and consistent advising information for students;
  • Writes appropriate notes summarizing important information concerning the contacts;
  • Utilizes the Patriot Connect (Salesforce) database to create and/or participates in campaigns for targeted outreach to select students;
  • Manages availability within the Student Scheduler in Patriot Connect and Microsoft Outlook to enhance the student experience for scheduling appointments;
  • Utilizes Patriot Connect database and Mason Degree Audit to assist with Mason's retention efforts; and
  • Researches, responds to, and logs student inquiries by email.
Processes
  • Maintains student records utilizing Patriot Connect (Salesforce);
  • Maintains open professional communication with faculty and administrators to share information and align academic services with the school's mission;
  • Provides accurate interpretations of policies and procedures for students, parents, and faculty;
  • Assists with processing of graduation audits, notifies students of discrepancies, and follows up with them on options; and
  • Assists with updates to orientation materials each semester.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and presentation skills;
  • Relationship skills, team work, and collaboration; and
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in related field;
  • Academic advising experience or relevant higher education experience;
  • Demonstrated work experience in academia; and
  • Working knowledge of student record databases.
