The Literacy Council of Alaska is seeking an Executive Director to lead a mission-driven nonprofit providing adult literacy and education services in Fairbanks and Interior Alaska. The Executive Director provides strategic leadership, financial oversight, fundraising, staff supervision, and community engagement to advance LCA’s mission and long-term sustainability.

Position Overview

The Executive Director (ED) is the chief executive officer of the Literacy Council of Alaska and is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and operational execution of the organization. The Executive Director ensures that LCA fulfills its mission, operates in compliance with applicable laws and funding requirements, maintains financial sustainability, and delivers high-quality literacy and adult education services to the Fairbanks and Interior Alaska community.

The Executive Director exercises independent judgment and discretion in carrying out the duties of the position and serves as LCA’s primary organizational leader, community representative, and staff supervisor.

Classification:Exempt (FLSA – Executive/Administrative)

Reporting Relationship

The Executive Director reports directly to the Literacy Council of Alaska Board of Directors. The Board retains responsibility for governance, fiduciary oversight, and evaluation of the Executive Director. The Executive Director is responsible for implementing Board-approved policies, strategic priorities, and organizational goals.

Essential Functions

Organizational Leadership & Strategy

Uphold and champion LCA’s mission, vision, and values.

Provide visionary and strategic leadership that aligns programs, people, and resources with Board-approved priorities.

Build and sustain a positive, inclusive, mission-centered culture for staff, students, and volunteers.

Represent LCA publicly as its primary ambassador and advocate for literacy, adult education, and workforce development throughout Fairbanks and the Interior.

Lead fundraising, grant development, donor relations, and revenue diversification efforts.

Ensure compliance with all grant, contract, and funding requirements, including allowable costs, reporting timelines, and performance outcomes.

Ensure strong financial oversight and compliance with U.S. GAAP.

Prepare and present the annual operating budget for Board review and approval.

Ensure appropriate internal controls, delegation, and separation of duties consistent with organizational size and resources.

Maintain operating reserves and oversee the endowment fund.

Partner with the Finance Director or contracted bookkeeping service to ensure accurate financial tracking.

Ensure timely submission of all required licenses, reports, audits, and compliance documents.

Provide emotionally intelligent, values-driven leadership that fosters trust, accountability, and professional growth.

Recruit, hire, onboard, evaluate, discipline, and, when necessary, terminate staff in accordance with LCA personnel policies and applicable federal and Alaska employment laws.

Supervise program leads, bookstore management, finance personnel, and marketing/administrative roles.

Support professional development and performance management systems for staff.

Ensure proper employee classification (exempt/non-exempt), timekeeping, and compliance with Alaska wage, hour, and leave laws.

Build and sustain strong relationships with funders, donors, educational institutions, nonprofits, agencies, and community organizations.

Develop and maintain formal partnerships that enhance program delivery and community impact.

Participate in and host mission-aligned community events to strengthen engagement, visibility, and outreach.

Maintain an active and mission-driven presence across media, public platforms, and community spaces.

Operational Oversight

Ensure staff have the appropriate tools, resources, and technology to perform effectively.
