Core Network Technician II - (Fairbanks, AK)
GCI Communication Corp. is offering a two‑week rotational position with a $2,500 hiring bonus. The Core Network Technician II will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the company’s core networks to ensure optimal network availability, performance, and reliability, proactively monitoring and supporting critical systems to maintain uninterrupted infrastructure functionality and customer satisfaction.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Conduct daily operational checks and perform routine preventative maintenance on all core network elements and associated infrastructure.
- Provide remote diagnostics and on‑site support with dispatch to urban and rural locations.
- Provide technical support for a variety of network elements, proactively monitoring performance, addressing service‑impacting issues, and escalating incidents as needed.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair network equipment and related hardware, minimizing MTTR.
- Deliver technical assistance and guidance to internal teams and external partners, including training.
- Communicate real‑time system status updates to stakeholders during outages.
- Administer and support system applications across vendor platforms, managing vendor tickets.
- Coordinate and execute system software, firmware, and hardware upgrades.
- Coordinate installation, testing, and troubleshooting of transmission facilities.
- Maintain accurate documentation and logs.
- Track repair parts and materials; submit NCSRs for scheduled maintenance.

- Knowledge of telecommunication protocols, availability, redundancy, reliability monitoring, signaling, and testing.

- Excellent computer skills and basic MS Office knowledge.
Job Requirements
This is a mid‑level position within the core network operations field, responsible for independently performing routine tasks and contributing to more complex assignments under moderate supervision.
Additional Competencies- Demonstrates a moderate understanding of telecommunications systems, installation, modification, and testing.
- Possesses a foundational knowledge of Change Management processes.
- Routinely conducts inspections and preventive maintenance.
- Technical Proficiencies:
- Basic to intermediate knowledge of transmission technologies (T‑Carrier, SONET, DWDM, CWDM, PON).
- Understanding of IP, including IP addressing schemes and subnetting principles.
- Familiarity with fiber optic safety guidelines and installation standards.
- Working knowledge of DC power systems.
- Proficient in using test equipment common to telecom systems.
High School diploma or equivalent.
Minimum of six (6) years of increasing responsibility and experience within a telecommunication central office or related environment.
Preferred Qualifications- Associate degree in electronics or relevant field.
- Telecom industry or job‑specific certifications.
- Experience with Ciena and Nokia.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, a satisfactory driving record, and successfully complete a defensive driving course.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions- Daily moving, traversing, and positioning on varied uneven or unstable surfaces such as roofs and trenches, often hampered by weather.
