Job Summary:

The incumbent will carry out public safety/first responder duties in rural villages within the Tanana Chiefs region. Functions include enforcing laws, providing emergency medical response, fire protection, search and rescue operations, public safety monitoring, animal control, emergency response and preparedness, public safety education and community policing. VPSO duties may vary by village. Adhere to the TCC Cheghwtsen model of service, providing timely, respectful, compassionate service and interaction that inspires trust.

Responsibilities
  • Enforce federal, state and locally adopted laws and ordinances. Assist local government in designing and implementing local ordinances.
  • Provide first response to emergency medical situations, as required; assist the community health aide and act in health aide's absence.
  • Provide local fire protection, prevention and education services; assist in establishing a local fire department and related training and equipment.
  • Conduct search and rescue operations with the Alaska State Troopers; assist with training, management and implementation of local search and rescue crews.
  • Maintain public safety through patrolling roads, waterfronts, and facilities; respond to emergencies and address safety hazards.
  • Provide animal control functions, including vaccinations and investigations; assist in establishing local animal control ordinances and enforcement.
  • Complete TCC and Department of Public Safety reports in a timely manner.
  • Assist State Troopers with law enforcement duties, investigations, securing crime scenes, serving summons, prisoner transport, and other duties as requested.
  • Probation and Parole supervision.
  • Provide public safety education programs (e.g., DARE, water safety, fire safety, hunters education, personal safety, ATV safety).
  • Assist local communities and TCC regional villages with emergency response planning and preparedness.
Other Responsibilities
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have valid Alaska Driver's License.
  • Previous law enforcement or public safety-related training or experience is helpful but not required.
  • Must be familiar with rural Native traditions and lifestyles in rural Native communities.
  • Must be a United States citizen or a resident alien who has demonstrated intent to become a citizen.
  • Must pass the Criminal background check on misdemeanor and/or felony convictions as judged by the Alaska State Troopers.
  • Must pass background check per federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements.
  • Must obtain the VPSO Certification Standard prior to the academy and demonstrate fitness requirements (25 push-ups, 27 sit-ups within 1 minute, and a 1.5 mile run in 15:12 or less).

Skills And Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate with others, both orally and in writing.
  • Must be free from conditions that would adversely affect performance as a Village Public Safety Officer.
  • Must pass a basic physical fitness test.
Supervision

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Physical Demands

Incumbent must be able to work long hours, travel and live in remote areas. Conditions may include travel by small aircraft, vehicle, boat and snow machine; lack of running water; extreme heat or cold; sleeping on floors; and exposure to adverse weather. Excellent health and physical condition are required. May patrol on foot and escort individuals as directed by Alaska State Troopers or medical providers.

Pre-hire physical fitness tests are required.
