Are you seeking a career in LAW ENFORCEMENT or FIREFIGHTING? With us you can do BOTH! The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT & PF) Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) is recruiting for a dedicated Airport Police and Fire Officer 1/2 to help us Keep Alaska Moving!
What You Will Be DoingFairbanks International Airport Police and Fire Officers are responsible for law enforcement, firefighting, and first‑responder medical assistance at the airport. Officers are State of Alaska certified law‑enforcement officers who enforce municipal and state laws, assist the traveling public, and support TSA regulations. They are the primary law‑enforcement response for airport terminals and roadways.
The incumbent receives training at a State‑certified police academy and field training with senior officers. Employees are enrolled in the DPS Academy in Sitka and must successfully pass the State of Alaska Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Aircraft Rescue Firefighter, Hazardous Materials Operations, and Emergency Trauma Technician certifications. All training is paid for by the Department and the employee receives pay while in training.
Officers will work shift work throughout their career. Education and special duty pay incentives are available. Prior experience or certifications may qualify for higher starting pay. Contact the hiring manager for more details.
- Citizenship: U.S. citizen.
- Age: 21 years of age or older.
- Education: High school diploma or GED. Home school diploma recognized by a state or local school district is acceptable.
- Driver's License: Valid driver’s license.
- Firearms: This class requires the use of a firearm. A prior misdemeanor domestic‑violence conviction disqualifies a candidate.
- Background Investigation: Criminal background review, fingerprinting, medical, visual, hearing, psychological evaluations, truth‑verification examination, and drug screening. Appointment is conditional on completion of all steps.
- Certification: Must obtain a basic certificate as a police officer issued by the Alaska Police Standards Council within 13 months of appointment and must be eligible to obtain Firefighter I and II certifications.
- Additional Criteria: No felony or domestic‑violence misdemeanor convictions, no dishonesty or moral turpitude convictions in the past 10 years, no serious‑injury convictions, no more than one DUI offense in the past 10 years, no controlled‑substance violations, no marijuana use in the year before hire.

Recruitment ProcessApplicants must pass a written examination, a physical agility test, an oral board interview, a polygraph or voice‑stress analysis test, a background investigation, a medical examination, and oral interview. Additional steps such as an online application and written application packet are required. Lateral applicants with relevant experience may be exempt from the written test.
Airport Security Badge & APSIN ClearanceCandidates must be eligible for an airport identification badge under TSA regulations (49 CFR 1542) and obtain Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) certification, each requiring a fingerprint‑based background check.
