As the Controller you will be responsible for the daily operations of the Accounting Department and exercise managerial and supervisory functions. This upper management position is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the organization’s financial systems and reporting, enforces compliance with GAAP, compliance with the terms and conditions of grants and contracts, and oversees internal and external audit readiness, including the Single Audit.

The Controller works closely with the Director of Finance and program leadership to support sound fiscal management and organizational growth.

JOB DUTIES:
  • Lead, mentor, and supervise accounting staff, fostering a collaborative and accountable work environment. Provide training, performance feedback, and support professional development initiatives.
  • Support review and documentation of new grants and contracts in collaboration with program and development teams. Oversee financial compliance with all grants and contracts, ensuring accurate and timely reporting to granting agencies. Ensure timely submission of fiscal reports, reimbursement requests, and financial documentation as required.
  • Manage and coordinate, in conjunction with the Director of Finance, all phases of the annual Single Audit, including audit preparation, scheduling, and communication with external auditors.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with retirement plan rules and legal requirements; oversee independent retirement plan audit and reporting.
  • Collaborate with program directors to monitor budgets and identify necessary modifications.

    Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
  • Review, prepare, and submit budget modifications in accordance with grant and contract guidelines.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to accounting policies, procedures, and financial systems. Oversight and maintenance of the organization’s accounting software and related financial systems. Maintain and enhance internal control systems to ensure data integrity, authorization accuracy, and regulatory compliance.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to accounting policies, procedures, and financial systems.
  • Partner with internal departments to streamline financial processes, enhance reporting accuracy, and improve organizational efficiency.

    Acts as Director of Finance, in their absence.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Three (3) years of experience with the full accounting system, including A/P, A/R, payroll, cash and equivalents, etc.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • A combination of experience, education, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may substitute for degree requirements.
