Position: Environmental Scientist I - ASL

The position requires a dynamic individual with an environmental science, biology, hydrology, chemistry, or other physical or life science background, the ability to work flexible hours (but primarily Monday through Friday), and a willingness to travel periodically. The position will be extremely active and will include a variety of field assignments related to contaminated site characterization, monitoring, and remediation, and office work, such as the preparation of planning and reporting documents.

Knowledge of environmental laws and regulations is required for higher‑level position grades. The overall position requires an individual who is looking to advance their career and would like to be involved with a diversity of assignments including, but not limited to, sampling groundwater, soil, sediment, surface water, and air for environmental contaminants; gathering and recording environmental data; oversight of groundwater monitoring well installation;

oversight of soil borings, use of global positioning systems; tabulating data; and preparing work plans and field reports.

The salary range for this position is $59,875-$72,150 per year.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities – All Levels

(including but not limited to)

  • Conducting contaminated site characterization, monitoring, and remediation field assessments safely and in accordance with work plans.
  • Traveling in aircraft (jets, small planes, and helicopters), motor vehicles, ATVs, and/or watercraft to perform fieldwork, site visits, or meetings.
  • Field screening and sampling for contaminants and environmental parameters in a variety of media in accordance with standard operating procedures, guidance, and regulations.
  • Documenting field operations, including personnel onsite, equipment onsite, weather, environmental data, and operational data using photography, neat and legible handwritten fieldnotes and forms, and tablets. Communicate with project managers via phone, email, and daily reports.
  • Examining and inspecting work progress, equipment, and job sites to verify safety and to ensure that project specifications are met.
  • Scheduling and overseeing subcontractors.
  • Adhering to schedule and financial objectives as specified by project managers.
  • Assisting or leading the preparation of proposals, planning documents, and reports.
  • Authoring and reviewing technical documents such as work plans and reports.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by management.
Level Specific Responsibilities Level – I
  • Provide project assistance to program and project managers; adhere to scope, schedule, and budget on assigned tasks.
  • Execute assigned tasks in accordance with work plans and direction from higher‑level staff.
  • Acquire and/or develop an area of technical expertise.
  • Engage program and project managers for task assignments.
  • Communicate work schedule to program and project managers.
  • 40% – 60% of the time may be spent conducting fieldwork, potentially in remote locations.
Minimum Qualifications All levels
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Physical/Environmental Sciences or a similarly related field.
  • Ability to pass background checks by various Federal Agencies (e.g., DoD, DHS, FAA, etc.) to obtain security access badges.
  • Valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record, able to drive a company vehicle.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and SharePoint Online.
  • Adept at explaining technical aspects of fieldwork to internal and external clients verbally and in writing.
Level – I
  • Zero (0) to Three (3) years of relevant professional working experience, specialized training, and/or an advanced degree, such as an MS, may be substituted for work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency in other programs such as Microsoft Project, AutoCAD, GIS, databases, and environmental modeling programs.
  • Current 40‑Hour HAZWOPER.
  • 8‑Hour HAZWOPER Refresher.
  • CPR/First Aid/AED Certified.
