Come join our safety team at UAF! This EHS Coordinator - Facilities Services position is responsible for overseeing occupational safety, health and environmental compliance at UAF Facilities Services (FS). FS departments includes grounds, building and transportation maintenance, design and construction, and utilities. As part of UAF's Environmental, Health, Safety and Risk Management team, this position must be able to interpret and apply OSHA regulations, current and new, to the various work areas;
understand the principals of and perform incident investigations; and manage FS compliance with OSHA and other state and federal regulations. The position requires the ability to analyze and resolve complex problems with multiple components and conflicting issues that may impact critical programs, operations, systems, major work groups, or multiple functional areas. The incumbent should be able to demonstrate a high degree of interpersonal skills that are required to communicate effectively with and successfully manage, coordinate and train occupational health and safety requirements department-wide.
This position requires the ability to network, interact, and support effective partnerships with key groups and individuals within the University of Alaska system and local community. This position is the point person for Facilities Services when occupational safety and health issues arise. Solutions can require negotiation skills, defensible knowledge of the issues, and accurate perception of the overall needs of Facilities Services (FS).
This position works for Environmental, Health Safety and Risk Management (EHSRM), but is located at the Facilities Services Physical Plant.
The Department of Environmental, Health, Safety and Risk Management (EHSRM) works to promote a culture of safety, environmental responsibility and risk mitigation for the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). EHSRM’s EHS Coordinator – Facilities Services is part of the Occupational Safety Team with dedicated support responsibilities for the Facilities Services – Maintenance & Operations Division. This division has a robust portfolio of maintenance & operations related shops including Labor, Roads & Grounds, Equipment & Vehicle Maintenance, Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC, Alarms & Insulation, PM and Custodial Services.
The EHS Coordinator – Facilities Services position is an occupational safety focal point that coordinates a broad safety program in a fast pasted, complex environment.
- Working knowledge of and the ability to develop, implement, assess and administer occupational safety, health and environmental regulations, programs and policies.
- Ability to prepare job hazard analysis and risk assessments for the various departments and activities within Facilities Services.
- Knowledge and experience to identify training needs, develop training, and train about 250 employees in the occupational safety and health programs including but not limited to:
Hazard Communication, Control of Hazardous Energy, Machine Guarding, Scaffold Erection and Inspection, Powered Industrial Trucks, Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection, Excavation & Trenching, Crane/Hoist Safety, Hazardous Waste, and Materials Handling and Storage. - Ability to manage multiple tasks within a complex organizational structure to execute occupational safety and health programs.
- Ability to problem solve, work independently as well as cooperatively with others. Ability to organize and prioritize workload. Ability to evaluate complex technical tasks and implement work procedures to accomplish them.
- Experience with emergency preparedness planning and first responder duties, performing risk assessments, and preparing disaster preparedness reports and plans.
- Knowledge of fall protection systems.
- Knowledge in warehousing and storage of hazardous materials, and hazardous material waste management.
- Proficiency with computers and software (i.e., Excel, Word, search engines, and injury tracking software).
