Mission and Values/Culture

The Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys is a dynamic agency focusing on applied geoscience research to benefit Alaska and its residents. The agency's mission is to determine the potential of Alaska lands for the production of metals, minerals, fuels, and geothermal resources, the locations and supplies of groundwater and construction material, and the potential geologic hazards to buildings, roads, bridges, and other installations and structures.

The Division views public geologic information as a key element in unlocking our natural resources, protecting communities, and helping Alaska’s economy grow. The Energy Resources Section generates new information about the geologic framework of frontier areas that may host undiscovered oil, gas, coal, and geothermal resources. We’ve recently expanded our work to support lower‑carbon energy sources, including geologic CO2 sequestration, and to assess critical minerals in carbon ores required for many clean energy products.
