Assists in the care and tutoring of students who may have physical, social-emotional, behavioral, self-help and/or developmental deficits. This position may be placed in Intensive Resource (IR) or Extended Resource (ER) secondary special education classrooms, depending on District and building needs. This position includes a $2,000 retention bonus. New hires will receive the first $1,000 installment in December upon completing the first semester, with the remaining $1,000 paid in June after finishing the school year.
The bonus will be prorated for part-time employees.
- Assist in caring for and tutoring students with various needs in secondary special education settings (IR/ER).
- Support students in developmental, behavioral, and social-emotional areas as assigned.
- Assist with reading, math, and age-appropriate curriculum under supervision.
- Communicate clearly with students, staff, and parents; help calm upset students and defuse conflicts when needed.
- Provide safe supervision and assistance according to district protocols; apply de-escalation techniques; assist in safe restraint if a student presents a danger to self or others as trained.
- Follow classroom and district procedures for safety, privacy, and student rights.
- Must meet at least one of the following three qualifications:
- A high school diploma, or equivalent, and have completed the Para Professional Assessment, or have the ability to pass the Para Professional Assessment within four (4) months of hire; or
- An associate’s degree or higher; or
- Completion of two years of higher education (at least 48 semester hours) or the equivalent
- Must have an understanding of developmental disabilities.
- Must demonstrate proper lifting skills to safely lift a minimum of 50 lbs. regularly.
- Must have empathy for the special needs of disabled children and the ability to communicate respectfully with physically and mentally disabled students.
- Successful completion of de-escalation training required within the first six (6) months of employment.
- Knowledge of basic reading, math, and curricular areas appropriate for age level of students.
- Ability to communicate clearly and consistently with students, staff, and parents, including calming upset or angry students, defusing conflicts, and safely restraining out-of-control students who present a danger to self or others.
- Must be able to remain outside for 30 minutes at 20 degrees below zero.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and use of a personal vehicle. If the vacancy lists signing skills, applicant must have completed ASL I and ASL II at a minimum.
- New Hire Hourly Rate:
Grade 7: $23.15 - $25.90 DOE - Internal Hourly Rate:
Determined by the ESSA Negotiated Agreement - Work Day: 3.5 or 7 hours
