Position Description

The College Counselor is responsible for guiding students and their parents through the college selection and application process, providing support and direction on course selection and extracurricular activities while in high school and education on the financial aid process. Many of our students are first‑generation college applicants and the selected candidate will be expected to have expertise with the unique needs of 1st‑Gen.

As a small school, CFS also requires that this position be able to fill other roles and responsibilities matching those that qualified candidates may possess to help assure the successful operation of the school and fulfillment of its mission. These may include teaching, co‑curricular programs, guidance or other areas of school function.

Position Requirements
  • A bachelor’s degree (graduate degree preferred) with demonstrated leadership, creativity and successful track record in college and/or academic guidance within secondary school or undergraduate programs.
  • Command and facility of new and emerging technologies and their use in communication, data gathering and reporting. Some affinity with Naviance preferred.
  • A sophistication of mind to work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders and celebrate the implementation of the school’s strategic planning initiatives.
  • Exceptional written, editorial and verbal skills coupled with the ability to think strategically.
  • Experience in developing strategic direction and leading adults and students to implement them.
  • Professional maturity and personal integrity with a desire to meet and exceed expectations and inspire others to be and do their best.
  • Passion for CFS and its mission with a strong affinity for residential education.
  • Willingness to work extended hours, particularly to meet valued and predetermined deadlines.
Position Responsibilities
  • Counsel each student in every aspect of the college application and selection process. This includes, but is not limited to:
  • Creating a preliminary list of schools based on the student’s profile, interests and needs.
  • Advising the student as to course selection in the eleventh and twelfth grade.
  • Helping students (and parents/guardians) conduct effective and meaningful campus visits and interviews.
  • Advising students regarding essay topics and other application questions.
  • Proofreading essays, short answers and applications on request.
  • Providing advice and direction with respect to financial aid.
  • Helping with the final selection of a school.
  • Manage experiential learning partnerships including sourcing and building relationships with programs and bringing programs on campus to educate students on programming. Facilitate application process for interested students.
  • Oversee alumni success program including programming and outreach to recent graduates to support their college transition.
  • Conduct meetings at various times during the year for parents and students regarding the college application process.
  • Prepare and update the school profile.
  • Write a counselor recommendation and school report for each member of the senior class.
  • Maintain contact with college admissions offices and attend professional workshops.
