Operational Support Grade - HMP Prison Support

Gate duties + ensuring the secure entry and exit of staff, visitors and vehicles; carrying out searches of staff, prisoners, visitors and vehicles; escorting vehicles and contractors; issuing and collecting staff keys and radios; patrolling and searching perimeter fence areas.

• Control room: operate the prison radio system, monitor CCTV, and report suspicious activities.
• Visits: welcome visitors upon arrival and escort them if needed.
• Correspondence: monitor and log incoming mail, report contraband items and preserve evidence.
• Night duties: ensure cell doors are locked and all prisoners are safely accounted for.
• Reception: photograph prisoners and process property and parcels.
• Prisoner supervision: supervise prisoners, exchange clothing and property, and assist officers in escorting them around the prison.
• Food delivery: walk around the prison delivering and collecting food trolly or using an electric tug vehicle.
• Driving duties: transport prisoners and their escorts to destinations and collect mail from the local sorting office.
• Phone calls: monitor the prison’s PIN phone system, maintain the log of PIN phone requests and complete relevant records.
• Procedures and protocol: understand and conform to national and local policies, and respond appropriately to incidents and emergencies.

No formal qualifications are required for this role. Successful candidates must be able to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence in English, or Welsh where specified for Welsh sites. A good judgement, common sense, sense of responsibility and the ability to work as part of a team are essential.
