What sort of work? Right now, we have an exciting opportunity for a Paralegal to join our Commercial and Regulatory Disputes team in our Bristol or Exeter office with a particular focus on supporting our Data Protection and Privacy Group.

Your role will include:

  • Responding to new client queries and assessing the scope for the team/firm to assist
  • Supporting members of the team to ensure that clients receive the required advice and support within the appropriate timescales, this may involve liaising with the client direct via email, telephone, MS Teams and/or face-to-face meetings
  • Liaising with existing clients directly and preparing draft correspondence to obtain information and evidence required to provide comprehensive advice and support in relation to their matters

Developing a lead role in managing a key client relationship including:

  • Accepting and acting on instructions from the client's legal team relating to Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs)
  • Working with a technology provider to process the documents for electronic review
  • Reviewing of documents on an electronic document review platform and considering disclosability and applicable exclusions under data protection law
  • liaising with the client's legal team and with the technology provider to finalise the results to be disclosed to the requestor
  • drafting correspondence to the client legal team as part of the regular reporting process.
  • Advising and working on DSARs for clients of the firm more generally
  • Assisting with advising clients of the firm and internal clients with respect to data protection law issues such as lawful basis for processing, data breach and requests made under the relevant legislation.
  • Maintaining effective communication with colleagues across the Firm, as required.

Developing data protection law knowledge by:

  • Regularly collating relevant articles and case law updates and changes to data protection legislation to share with the internal team and drafting articles to appear on the Michelmores website and Linked In
  • Attending external webinars and conferences relating to data protection and privacy to continue to develop knowledge
  • Completing legal research and be aware of current legislation and legal issues
  • Maintaining time recording on client matters on a daily basis in accordance with the firm's procedures.
  • Managing files diligently and reviewing each regularly.
  • Complying with internal policies and procedures, ethical standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensuring the confidentiality and security of all firm and client documentation and/or information.

The team has a standalone reputation, being ranked in the London and South West divisions of Chambers & Partners and Legal 500 for its corporate and commercial litigation, professional negligence, reputation management, intellectual property, data and privacy, fraud, regulatory investigations and insurance coverage expertise.

The team is also part of firm's wider Dispute Resolution offering, which is of strategic importance, and includes specialist contentious agriculture, construction, insolvency, probate and real estate lawyers who we often work alongside.
