Responsibilities
  • The post holder is responsible for supporting the Head Phlebotomist.
  • In the absence of the Head Phlebotomist, act as the leader of the Phlebotomy Team.
  • Perform venepuncture on adult patients.
  • Collect blood samples from patients, staff and referrals with difficult venous access.
  • Contribute to an efficient, high quality service and maintain proficiency, competence and professional standards.
  • Work in ward environment as well as outpatient clinics.

More detail about the role Our main hospital site is located in the historic Cathedral city of Exeter, a vibrant community offering excellent family amenities and surrounded by stunning countryside. Situated at the heart of the South West, the area provides easy access to both the coast and countryside of Devon and Cornwall. We are seeking to appoint an exceptional Senior Phlebotomist to support our dedicated phlebotomy team. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced, motivated, and enthusiastic professional who is passionate about delivering high‑quality patient care and supporting staff development.

The successful candidate will be involved in the effective planning and day‑to‑day delivery of the phlebotomy service. They will support the Phlebotomy Management team by providing professional, technical, and motivational leadership across the team, ensuring services are efficient, safe, and patient‑focused. The post holder will be involved in:

  • Workforce training, supervision, and ongoing competency assessment
  • Managing absence and annual leave effectively
  • Contributing to service planning and quality improvement
Requirements
  • Significant phlebotomy experience within a healthcare setting
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate a team
  • Strong IT skills, with confidence using computerized ordering and collection systems
  • Flexibility to work as part of a roster, including some weekends and bank holidays

Please note that this role is not eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship, so applicants must have the right to work in the UK.

Working Pattern: 30 hours per week.
