Locum Specialty Doctor Psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry

We are looking for a an enthusiastic and committed Locum Speciality Doctor for an Inpatient General Adult post, fixed term for 1 year with a possibility of extension. This is a 10 sessions at week post, based at The Cedars, Exeter. The post holder will join a significant medical complement on the ward with two Trust Grade doctors in post and a consultant psychiatrist or MPAC.

The post-holder will work under the supervision of a consultant psychiatrist/MPAC and will be integral to a multidisciplinary team, accessing local CPD activities as appropriate. The post-holder will be responsible for the assessment and management of mental health problems on a routine and emergency basis.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work within a multidisciplinary setting offering psychiatric medical input in the assessment, treatment and care management of patients, carrying out all general duties including mental state examinations. To provide up to date, effective, safe medical care for patients in order to promote their recovery, and promote their insight with a view to relapse prevention.

Person Specification Clinical Governance
  • Commitment to involvement in on site programme of clinical governance
  • Knowledge of evidence based practice, clinical audit and involvement of users and carers in service provision
Research
  • Interest in maintaining up to date clinical knowledge base.
  • Enthusiasm to contribute to research on site.
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals.
Qualifications
  • MB BS or equivalent
  • GMC registration.
  • Membership or Affiliateship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent.
  • Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983.
Clinical Skills and Knowledge
  • Excellent clinical skills in interviewing and physical and psychological assessment of patients.
  • Ability to manage crises and act independently.
  • Ability to manage potentially violent and disturbed patients.
  • Confidence in assessing and managing physical health problems and emergencies.
  • Working knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983
