Job Summary

Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of mothers and babies? Join our dedicated team at the Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) in Exeter and its linked Outreach Team, providing specialist mental health care during the perinatal period.

This unique role offers variety and impact working across an eight‑bed inpatient unit and supporting families in the community. You will collaborate with a skilled multidisciplinary team, contribute to assessments and reviews, and help shape the future of perinatal mental health services.

This is a fixed‑term post for 12 months which offers 7.5 programmed activities.

Main duties of the job

The role of the Specialty doctor on the MBU includes being part of a MDT team and playing an active part in the team meetings and ward reviews. The role includes completing assessments and reviews of patients outside of these MDT meetings.

The postholder will also provide a degree of cover during periods when the Consultant is on leave. A named Responsible Clinician will always be allocated to provide oversight and be available on the ward if required, ensuring safe and supported clinical practice at all times.

Qualifications
  • MB BS or equivalent
  • GMC registration
Desirable qualifications
  • Membership or Affiliateship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent.
  • Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983.
Research
  • Interest in maintaining up to date clinical knowledge base.
Desirable research
  • Enthusiasm to contribute to research on site.
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals.
  • IT skills.

Clinical skills & knowledge
  • Excellent clinical skills in interviewing and physical and psychological assessment of patients.
  • Writing comprehensive, clear medical notes.
  • Ability to manage crises and act independently.
  • Ability to manage potentially violent and disturbed patients.
  • Confidence in assessing and managing physical health problems and emergencies.
  • Working knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983.
Desirable clinical skills
  • Up to date CPR training.
  • Ability to apply psychological models to practical situations.
  • Evidence based knowledge of perinatal psychiatry.
  • Knowledge of clinical risk management.
  • Knowledge of relevant Mental Health legislation.
Experience
  • Has completed at least four years full‑time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part‑time or flexible basis).
