Job Summary

UDC is seeking a highly skilled Analytical Research Scientist to join the Analytical & Thermal Application Team at our Tech and Innovation Center in Ewing, NJ. This role will serve as the primary technical lead for ICP‑MS analysis of OLED emitter, host, and intermediate materials. The scientist will be responsible for method development, trace‑level quantification, contamination studies, instrument performance oversight, and cross‑functional technical guidance.

In addition to ICP‑MS, the position will support the comprehensive analytical characterization of organic electronic materials using advanced chromatographic and mass‑spectrometric techniques. The scientist will collaborate closely with synthetic chemistry, process engineering, and device teams to provide high‑quality analytical data and technical insight.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for ICP‑MS instrumentation, trace‑metal analysis workflows, and contamination‑control strategies.
  • Develop, optimize, and validate ICP‑MS quantitative methods for ultra‑trace elemental analysis of organic and organometallic compounds.
  • Own sample preparation protocols, including acid digestion, microwave digestion, and solvent‑compatibility approaches tailored to small‑molecule OLED materials.
  • Conduct data modeling, spectral interference correction, and isotopic pattern interpretation.
  • Perform root‑cause investigations related to metal impurities, supply‑chain contamination, sample handling, or process deviations.
  • Ensure instrument uptime through preventive maintenance, tuning, calibration, and performance qualification.
  • Apply advanced chromatographic techniques (HPLC, UHPLC) and mass spectrometry (LC‑MS, GC‑MS, MALDI) to study purity, molecular identity, and impurity profiles of OLED materials.
  • Develop multidimensional analytical approaches by integrating ICP‑MS with chromatographic separations, when needed.
  • Interpret complex spectra and chromatograms to provide mechanistic insight into impurity formation or material degradation pathways.
  • Communicate analytical findings through detailed technical reports and participate in cross‑functional scientific reviews.
Operational & Cross‑Functional Responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate documentation of methods, sample histories, instrument logs, and analytical results.
  • Guide junior scientists and technicians, in proper analytical techniques and laboratory best practices.
  • Support quality control workflows, sample inventory, and analytical readiness for development milestones.
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts for analytical capability expansion.
Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Materials Science, or a closely related field
  • Hands‑on expertise with ICP‑MS (≥2 years), including method development, trace‑metal quantification, and spectral analysis
  • Demonstrated experience with sample digestion, interference correction, and elemental speciation
  • Strong technical background in modern chromatographic and mass‑spectrometric techniques
  • Knowledge of organic small‑molecule systems, organometallics, or organic electronic materials…
