About UsWe are a small, established union masonry subcontractor focused on commercial projects in the Chicago area. We self‑perform our work and are looking for a hands‑on financial leader to take ownership of our accounting and finance function.
Role OverviewThis is an in‑office position for an experienced Construction Controller who can handle both day‑to‑day accounting and higher‑level reporting for ownership.
Key Responsibilities- Full‑cycle accounting: A/R, A/P, payroll, month‑end close, bank reconciliations
- Job costing and WIP schedules for multiple commercial projects
- Manage union payroll, fringe benefits, and reporting
- Prepare monthly and annual financial statements and cash‑flow forecasts
- Coordinate with our CPA, bonding/surety agent, and bank
- Oversee billing (AIA, T&M, change orders) and collections
- Maintain internal controls, budgets, and cost controls
- Support bidding and pricing decisions with accurate cost data
- 3–7+ years in construction accounting, ideally with a subcontractor
- Solid knowledge of job cost accounting, WIP, and percentage‑of‑completion
- Experience with union payroll and certified payroll
- Prior experience as a Controller, Senior Accountant, or similar role in a small to mid‑sized construction company
- Proficiency with construction accounting software (e.g., Foundation, Sage, Jonas, Viewpoint, or similar) and Excel
- Comfortable in a small, hands‑on office environment
- Hands‑on, detail‑oriented, and comfortable "owning" the numbers
- Clear communicator with field leadership, ownership, and outside partners
- Values accountability, integrity, and long‑term relationships
