Summary

The Respite Supervisor is responsible for assisting in the design, leadership, and daily operation of Excelsior’s therapeutic respite and camp-based programming. This role blends therapeutic recreation, behavioral health support, and camp program leadership to deliver safe, engaging, trauma-informed, and skill‑building experiences for youth and families.

This position leads daily respite programming and oversees the development and execution of seasonal camps, including summer, winter, and spring camp models. The Supervisor builds and manages a multidisciplinary team that may include peer supports, care coordinators, and mental health therapists, while also recruiting, training, and supervising seasonal camp staff.

This role requires experience in camp development, challenge course facilitation, team‑building programming, and therapeutic recreation, along with the ability to create structured environments where youth build skills, strengthen relationships, regulate emotions, and have fun in a safe and supportive setting.

How to Qualify: (Required)
  • Bachelor’s degree in behavioral health, Social Services, Recreation Management, Education, Therapeutic Recreation or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in youth camp programming, therapeutic recreation, or behavioral health services.
  • Ability to obtain challenge course certification as needed to maintain and facilitate onsite course.
  • Experience developing and running camps or experiential programs.
  • Experience supervising multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated experience with team building and group facilitation.
  • Experience facilitating a challenge course or willingness to learn and understand course certification and standards.
  • Must be 21 years or older.
  • Able to pass criminal background check.
  • Valid driver’s license.

* New employees with out-of-state licenses must obtain a Washington State Driver’s License within 30 days of employment.

Core Responsibilities
  • Assists in the design, planning, and daily experiential programming that supports behavioral health, skill development, emotional regulation, and social connection.
  • Develops and implements structured seasonal camp programs (summer, winter, and spring), including curriculum, schedules, activities, staffing plans, and safety protocols.
  • Assesses participant needs through observation, screening tools, team consultation, and review of service plans to ensure programming aligns with individualized behavioral health and wellness goals.
  • Supervises and coordinates a multidisciplinary program team, including peer supports, care coordinators, therapists, and seasonal staff, ensuring role clarity, quality service delivery, and team collaboration.
  • Facilitates experiential, team‑building, and challenge course activities using trauma‑informed and safety‑centered practices, while maintaining appropriate certifications and risk management standards.
  • Provides hands‑on instruction and active engagement in therapeutic, recreational, and experiential activities, modeling pro‑social behavior, emotional regulation, and positive group leadership.
