The Armed Forces Retirement Home–Washington campus is seeking a dynamic Supervisory Recreation Specialist to lead innovative and engaging programs that enhance the lives of our retired service members at this federal CCRC. Located in the heart of Washington, D.C., our expansive 272‑acre campus boasts breathtaking views of the Capital and the Washington Monument. In this role, you’ll guide a talented team in creating and delivering activities across all five levels of care, ensuring every resident has access to enriching, enjoyable experiences.

This is a full‑time on‑site role located in Washington, DC for a Supervisory Recreation Specialist. The Supervisory Recreation Specialist will oversee and coordinate various recreational activities and programs, including organizing events, developing schedules, and ensuring activities meet the needs and interests of residents. This role involves supervising staff, preparing reports, managing budgets, and collaborating with other departments to enhance the overall resident experience.
Regular communication with residents to gather feedback and adjust programs accordingly will be essential.
- Experience in recreational program development, event planning, and schedule coordination
- Skills in supervising staff, preparing reports, and budget management
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to gather and utilize resident feedback
- Working knowledge of culturally enriching activities, wellness programs, and life enrichment programs
- Ability to collaborate effectively with various departments and staff members
- Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Hospitality, or a related field
- Previous experience in a similar role or in a retirement community is a plus
- Strong organizational and leadership skills
Applicants must currently possess and maintain at least one of the following credentials:
- Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) credential, issued by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC); or
- Board Certified Creative Art Therapist (ATR-BC) credential, issued by the Art Therapy Credential Board; or
- Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC) credential, issued by the Certification Board for Music Therapists.
