Job Summary

The Medical Assistant operates in a team with other clinic healthcare providers and support staff. The assistant escorts patients to the exam rooms and assists in determining medical problems. The MA assists medical providers with minor diagnostic procedures and treatments as directed; taking vital signs, maintaining records, and recording test results.

Education
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assisting program; or a minimum of one (1) year of experience working as a medical assistant.
Experience
  • Customer service related experience working with the general public (1 year).
  • Experience in a multi‑provider medical practice.
  • ICD‑10 coding experience.
  • CPT‑4 coding experience.
  • Experience working with insurance/billing in a healthcare setting or insurance organization.
  • Experience with healthcare information systems, such as electronic health record and practice management systems.
  • Experience working with low‑income, multi‑ethnic populations.
Credentials
  • Medical Assistant – Certified or Interim – certification with the State of Washington.
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR/AED). Certification must be obtained at hire.
  • Verified immunity to measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), and varicella (chickenpox). Immunity may be demonstrated through vaccination records or titer results. Medical or religious accommodation requests may be reviewed on a case‑by‑case basis.
Job Specific Functions/Performance
  • Greet patients, interpreters and visitors, in person and by phone, promptly, courteously and helpfully. Respond to inquiries, take messages, and provide accurate information regarding schedules and services.
  • Monitor schedules and patient arrivals, participate in sequencing patients, and assist co‑workers to maintain smooth and efficient patient flow for maximum productivity.
  • Assist providers with minor diagnostic procedures, treatments and education as directed.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
  • Coordinate tasks regarding health information with Health Information Specialists.
  • Review scheduled appointments in advance to prepare for the patient visit. Obtain needed information such as state immunization registry, ER records, specialty reports and diagnostic results.
  • Perform capillary and venous blood withdrawal as directed.
  • Perform intradermal, subcutaneous and intramuscular injections as directed.
  • Administer eye drops and topical ointments as directed.
  • Label and maintain proper storage for specimens and tests. Perform in‑house lab testing and deliver on‑site results to provider.
  • Timely review and completion of tasks as assigned.
  • Accurately and timely complete/document services provided, including submission of billing codes.
  • Schedule patients for procedures and provide all necessary paperwork and instructions prior to the procedure.
