The Director of Pharmacy plays a critical role for developing, implementing, and directing programs and people that optimize the use of medications. The process is a dynamic one that ensures that people and systems coupled with medications are administered and prescribed in an appropriate, safe, and cost-effective manner. This pharmacy director oversees and directs key regional medication/pharmacy operations programs including pharmacist direct patient care, pharmacy operations, pharmacy infusion services, regulatory compliance, clinic administered medications management (physician offices, ambulatory surgery centers, and other sites), pharmacy training programs and/or pharmacy informatics.

People management may include managers, supervisors, pharmacy leads, clinical pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy residents, pharmacy interns, pharmacy support personnel, and other teammates.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Oversees and provides direction for clinical pharmacy-based programs and clinical teams including, but not limited to:
    • Pharmacy Infusion centers for clinical, operational, and financial performance
    • Direct pharmacist patient care services
    • Medication and Clinical Pharmacy Programs, including learning programs
    • Pharmacy regulatory work to oversee healthcare entity (HCE) licensing, USP 797/800 and ambulatory surgery center (ASC) consultant work
    • Other key operational pharmacy and medication processes
  • Develops and implements medication related polices, standard work, job aids, guidelines, and protocols for departments and the clinic
  • Manages financial performance including development and monitoring of capital and operating budgets, forecasting, analysis, guiding and adjusting operations for improvement
  • Oversees affordability and value opportunities, including process impacting medication workflow
  • Manages collaboration with clinical leaders in primary, surgical, specialty care and business partners to ensure alignment clinic operational goals
  • Oversees pharmacy regulatory work to develop and implement work plans, resolve issues, and determine organizational structures
  • Works on pharmacy and medication operational programs to ensure clinical operations, including but not limited to medication shortages, medication safety, and optimize medication use.
  • Ensures work is aligned with local, regional and national work groups
  • Conducts education for providers and staff regarding new drugs, new indications, counter-detailing of industry advertisement including new provider orientation, new teammate orientation and other appropriate education venues
