About the JobThis is general duty firefighting work performing emergency and non-emergency tasks in the areas of fire suppression, hazardous materials, technical rescue, fire prevention, emergency or disaster preparedness, as well as responding to emergency medical calls and performing skilled Basic Life Support (BLS). The City of Everett employs six Engine Companies (1 swing engine), two Ladder Companies (1 swing ladder), three ALS medic units, and three BLS aid units.
There are six fire stations located throughout the city. There are 180 uniformed firefighters employed. In 2024 the Department was dispatched to approximately 26,000 incidents with about 21,714 being EMS incidents. The ranked eligible register established from this examination process will be used to fill all vacancies in this job class until the register expires in 12 months or is depleted.
In addition, entry into this classification through an open/continuous basis is subject to a twelve month probationary period. Successful candidates shall be subject to an extensive background to include a Washington State Patrol background inquiry pursuant to RCW 43.43.832. Hiring offers are contingent upon successful completion of a CPAT, LEOFF medical evaluation, and medical history review, which includes drug testing, and a psychological evaluation is a condition of employment.
All candidates will be required to attend a 2-week pre academy in Everett, WA, a 13-week Snohomish County Fire Training Academy located in Stanwood, WA, and a 6-week post academy located in Everett, WA. This job classification is represented by the Everett Firefighters Union, IAFF Local 46.
Under the supervision of a Company Officer, Firefighters are responsible for responding to a variety of fire calls that involve firefighting, fire prevention, and emergency medical assistance. The work also involves responding to and dealing with manmade and natural disasters that pose a threat to public safety. Incumbents often work in unpleasant, stressful, and hazardous conditions that generally require strenuous physical exertion for extended periods of time.
Workplace hazards may also include emergency driving situations, exposure to chemicals, blood borne and airborne pathogens, smoke, fumes, gases, extreme heat, working on ladders, and working in fire‑induced weakened structures. Firefighters may also spend substantial amounts of time engaged in the routine inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of equipment, apparatus, and quarters, and in supervised firefighting, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or other related training.
The work is performed according to detailed oral and/or written instructions and to specified policies, procedures, and practices learned on the job. Work methods and results are subject to continual inspection for accuracy and conformance to established departmental policies, procedures, and certification requirements.
