Corrections Deputy - Exceptional - Civil Service
To monitor, supervise and maintain custody of inmates in the Snohomish County Jail, the residential work release facility, and those who are placed into non‑custody community corrections programs.
Statement of EssentialJob Duties
- Books inmates into the jail, work release or community corrections programs; conducts interview to determine medical, special needs, and acceptability to book; assists in entering booking information into the jail computer system; conducts personal (pat downs, strip searches), and property searches; takes fingerprints and prepares for submission to AFIS, WASIC, and FBI; photographs other identification data; releases inmates at completion of sentence.
- Supervises inmate activities within the jail housing areas and movement between areas; supervises and documents food services; supervises inmates in cleanup and maintenance; verifies medical and health care needs; monitors prescribed medications; monitors recreational, educational and visitation activities; conducts visits and interviews with authorized persons; answers phone calls and communicates with authorized persons.
- When assigned to community corrections checks for outstanding warrants and criminal history; monitors inmates released to and returned from work, education and treatment programs; verifies that work release inmates and program participants are where authorized through documentation or phone contact; monitors electronic equipment for inmates on Home Detention and reports breaches of conditions.
- Supervises the preparation of inmates for transportation to courts and other appointments.
- Conducts regular security checks; screens and searches visitors; conducts periodic headcounts and searches of inmates and areas to prevent contraband; administers or arranges for breathalyzer or urinalysis; may assist in operating the jail control room.
- Instructs inmates on jail rules and procedures; investigates suspected rule violations; takes informal action; writes violation reports; participates in disciplinary proceedings; arranges transfer of work release inmates returned to the maximum security jail by disciplinary board; maintains secure custody.
Job Duties
- Maintains custody and control of inmates when confined to hospitals or other facilities; coordinates with courts to assure appearance for trial; processes court documents.
- Serves on committees such as training, safety, classification, wellness, affirmative action, equal employment opportunity.
- May be assigned temporary assignment as training officer or instructor positions.
- When assigned to community corrections conducts thorough orientation explaining program procedures and rules; answers questions and discusses problems; works with staff to develop interventions.
- Provides direct one‑on‑one or group assistance to work release inmates as needed.
- Receives, records, and maintains court and other documents; receives and releases cash; responds to requests for information per policy.
- Assists in risk/needs assessment and contributes to case reviews and program placement.
- May provide delivery and administration of medications per RCW 70.48.490.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
No previous experience required. Must possess a high school diploma or GED; be at least eighteen years old; be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or DACA recipient; pass job‑related tests.
Special RequirementsCandidates must successfully pass a criminal history background investigation, a polygraph examination, a psychological evaluation, a pre‑employment medical exam and drug screening. A post‑employment physical fitness and agility test will be required. A valid Washington State Driver’s License (unrestricted except vision) may be required. Ability to acquire First Aid and CPR certificates is required. Employees may be required to carry firearms and qualify annually.
Completion of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Academy within six months of employment is required.
