Associate Planner
The City of Everett is accepting applications on an open/competitive basis for the Civil Service examination process for an Associate
Planner in the Planning Department. There is one vacancy in both our Land Use and Long-Range Planning divisions. Each vacancy will be filled at either the Associate Planner or Planner level.

About The Department/Division Land Use PlanningLand Use Planning administers the day‑to‑day applications and development permits for land use, ensuring projects comply with local zoning and development codes. Its responsibilities include processing permits for building, subdivisions, and environmental reviews, verifying zoning, and providing technical and public assistance for land development questions.
Long‑Range PlanningLong‑Range Planning collaborates to create a strategic vision for the future by guiding land use, development, and community growth over 10‑25 years. Its core duties include developing the comprehensive plan and regulations that address land use, natural resources, and transportation, as well as implementing specific projects and policies related to area planning, historic preservation and shoreline master plans.
About The JobThis is mid‑level professional work in urban planning. The work of an Associate Planner is assigned with general instructions outlining the type of project and the desired general objectives of the assignment. Employees in this class exercise originality, independence, and judgment in preparing and developing portions of the comprehensive plan or in project reviews. The work includes preparing public presentations in planning issues for presentation before various public bodies.
The work is performed under the supervision of the Planning Director or designee and is reviewed by observation, evaluations of reports and projects, and on the basis of other established performance criteria.

This work involves understanding and applying all applicable regulatory codes, including, but not limited to, Everett Municipal Code, Washington State Growth Management Act and Everett Comprehensive Plan, to development projects.
The work involves conducting studies, assembling and analyzing socio‑economic data, and preparing proposals regarding future development and redevelopment in the city.
