Job FunctionsWe are seeking a part‑time Head Coach who will oversee all aspects of the AMHS Mock Trial program. This part‑time leadership role is designed for an individual with experience in law, legal work, or prior involvement in Mock Trial or similar programs. The Head Coach provides leadership, supervision, and organizational oversight for the high school’s co‑curricular after‑school Mock Trial program, ensuring alignment with YMCA of Greater Seattle District and State policies.
The AMHS team participates in jamborees and inter‑squad scrimmages throughout the fall and prepares for district and state competitions in February and March. This position reports to the AMHS Dean of Students and Vice‑Principal. We are seeking a coach who is energized by collaborating with high school students and committed to fostering a strong, engaging Mock Trial program.
- Experience:
Proven background in coaching, teaching, or competing in mock trial, speech, or debate. Experience in law, legal work, or law enforcement is strongly valued. Prior experience coaching Mock Trial or similar academic competitions is preferred. - Knowledge:
Strong understanding of courtroom procedures, rules of evidence, trial advocacy techniques, and the structure of competitive Mock Trial, including scope and sequence, timelines, case analysis, objections, pre‑trial motions, and effective openings and closings. - Education:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field required. Secondary teaching experience, a current Washington State teaching certificate, or a law degree are preferred but not required. - Skills:
Exceptional communication, leadership, and organizational abilities, with the capacity to mentor adolescents, build a positive and cohesive team culture, and manage complex, multi‑day competition schedules. - Team & Student Development:
Ability to collaborate effectively with high school students, fostering confidence, professionalism, and enthusiasm for the program while modeling integrity and respect.
$5,000 stipend. This position is not eligible for benefits.
Responsibilities- Mentoring:
Demonstrated ability to guide, motivate, and support high school students as they develop advocacy skills, confidence, and professional habits. - Organization:
Skilled in planning and executing complex schedules, including multi‑day competitions, travel planning, and coordinated team activities. - Ethics:
Strong commitment to integrity, fairness, and adherence to the highest standards of conduct in all competitive and instructional settings. - Responsible for the day‑to‑day operation of the Archbishop Murphy High School Mock Trial Team and serves as the primary head coach to the team.
- Oversee all aspects of the Mock Trial, including the education and instruction of students to learn and compete to the highest standards.
- Work closely with the Mock Trial Booster Club for fundraising.
- Coordinate with the departments at AMHS regarding administrative aspects of the program.
- The team meets weekly in the fall to coordinate off‑season trainings and practices. Practices vary based on the activities needed to ensure preparedness for all upcoming in‑and off‑season scrimmages.
- Always supervise the team during practices and events. Organize team tryouts, plan practices, develop teams, organize case etc.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, and AMHS faculty/staff.
- Coordinate field trips/team travel with school administration.
- Responsible for program fundraising, registering with the YMCA, and organizing banquets, awards, and new family dinners.
- Must enjoy collaborating with high school students and be committed to helping students learn.
