Job Description

This is a 6.25 hour per day, 180 days per year, 1:1 Para educator position with benefits at Challenger Elementary School. Anticipated start date is as soon as possible. Hours for this position are 8:45 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. The successful candidate will work under the direction of the teacher in the classroom with a student requiring 1:1 support.

Minimum Qualification(s): Structured is a program for students with Autism or other characteristics often associated with Autism who require predictable routines and visually based instruction. Students’ primary instructional needs and in functional communication (functional social interactions, functional AAC use, and applying basic communication to access academics) self‑regulation (sensory, emotional, behavioral), and adaptive (visual schedules, following single to multi‑step directions and developing school routines).

Students have cognitive delays which result in the need for instruction using alternate or off grade‑level curriculum. Instruction in the Structured classroom is often provided individually or in small groups (2-4 students) targeting nonacademic skills. Program para educators are used to support students in the general and special education classroom setting.

Job Summary

Assist the teacher with planning, preparation and delivery of a quality instructional program based upon state standards, district curriculum, and effective instruction for students with diverse learning needs. Supervise students at recess, in the cafeteria, library, provide assistance for students riding the bus, and perform crossing guard duties before and after school. May assist with implementation of special education services for students i.e., IEP goals, medical assistance, physical support and personal care.

Performance

Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • Assist teacher(s) with the daily supervision of students for the purpose of maintaining and providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Under the teacher’s direction, administer multiple student tests, collect and maintain diagnostic and test data, update student records, and assess student progress.
  • Assist teacher(s) with monitoring and managing student behavior and progress; share observations with teacher(s) and other professional staff.
  • Assist teacher(s) with implementation of various strategies to address diverse student needs and support individual educational growth and achievement goals.
  • Provide clerical and general classroom assistance for staff, which may include collecting and data entry of information, correspondence, copying, filing, and preparation of classroom materials.
  • Administer first aid, medical assistance, physical support and personal care for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, and/or disabled children.
  • Provide physical assistance for students with special needs such as feeding, toileting, proper lifting and positioning of students in and out of chairs and with adaptive equipment; assist students with the use of specific equipment related to their disability (e.g., materials, assistive technology, visual aids).
  • Track and dispense authorized student medications.
  • Perform crossing guard duties before and after school to supervise and monitor students.
  • Assist with monitoring students in the cafeteria and/or at recess; assist with maintaining a clean and orderly environment for student safety and well‑being.
  • Participate in meetings and training for the purpose of sharing information, improving the employee skills and knowledge, implementing school initiatives and addressing student needs.
  • Comply with District Policies.
  • Maintain consistent presence at assigned work site and regularly work hours specified.
