SUMMARY
Under the direction of Clinical Nurse Manager (Inpatient)/Program Director (Partial) and Unit Charge RN, the Behavioral Health Specialist III (BHS III) is responsible for providing care and safety to children and adolescents as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team. The BHS III provides input into the formulation of the day‑to‑day schedule and structure of a therapeutic milieu and the implementation, observation, and documentation of this program under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

- Milieu management: coordinate milieu treatment, oversee implementation of behavior management plans, and monitor documentation of BHS I and BHS II in the electronic medical record.
- Supervise Behavioral Health Specialists on job performance and professional development goals.
- Establish performance and professional growth goals for milieu staff.
- Orient new staff, develop orientation materials, and support in‑service programs.
- Teach crisis management techniques to milieu staff.
- Recommend and carry out hospital disciplinary policies as necessary.
- Interview and evaluate prospective staff; recommend qualified individuals.
- Participate in consultation with treatment team, family, outside agencies, etc.
- Schedule milieu staff: vacations, personal days, earned days.
- Act as liaison between Behavioral Health Specialists and Unit RNs throughout the shift.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- May be asked to perform comparable duties in other clinical settings throughout the hospital system as program needs arise.
- Baccalaureate Degree in a Human Service field preferred; other education and experience may be considered and substituted.
- Demonstrated aptitude and willingness to learn role‑related skills.
- Knowledge of and ability to provide care across the lifespan, considering aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns.
- Participation in BHS Career Ladder within 6 months of appointment.
- Over three years in Milieu Therapy or a related field with demonstrated competence in childcare techniques and supervisory ability.
- Independent action within Program policies and practices; referrals of complex problems to supervisor.
- Supervisory responsibility: supervise up to 10 FTEs.
